Joshua 20:1-end-In this chapter, the LORD told Joshua to set aside the cities of refuge where the slayer that kills any person unawares and unwittingly can run to before the judgment. The slayer shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment , and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days, then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city , and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.” (v. 6).
And the following cities were selected: Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah, Bezer in the wilderness out of the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh. (v. 7-8)
We are serving a God that is full of compassion and mercy. He loves sinners but hates our sins. From generation to generation He continuously shows His love toward mankind We could see this right from the garden of Eden when Adam and Eve sinned against Him, He clothed them before sending them out of the garden. He did not leave them to fend for themselves, He made Himself available to them because we read about Cain and Abel offering sacrifices to Him.
God has never changed and because He knows who we are, He makes provisions for our shortcomings. There is nothing we can do that will surprise Him, and that is why He is God. He told Joshua to earmark some cities as cities of refuge, a place somebody can run to in case of accidental killing of his neighbor so as to give time for thorough investigation before convicting the slayer. Nobody can touch the slayer while he is in the city of refuge. God created us and He is the One that we can run to, so He is our refuge. Psalm 91:2 says “I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in Him will I trust.” Proverbs 18:10 says “The Name of the LORD is a strong tower, the righteous runs into it and is safe.
Thus a Name has been given to us, a Name that is above all names and that at the mention of this Name (Jesus), every knee should bow of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.(Philippians 2:10). This is the provision that God had prepared for us from the foundation of the world that His Son would come to the world to save sinners. Matthew 1:21 says ” And she shall bring forth a son , and you shall call His name JESUS for He shall save His people from their sins. This is the whole purpose of Jesus coming to the world as the one to run to as our SAVIOR, our Refuge. Romans 5:8 says, “But God commends His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Matthew 11:28 says “Come unto Me all ye that labor, and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.”
Therefore Jesus came so that we might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). Let us remember that there is none other Name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:12) If we have come to Him to receive salvation, we should hold on to Him to the end. He says “He is going to prepare a place for us so that where He is we can be there also.” It is only through His passport that we can enter heaven. and therefore we must remain obedient to Him to the end. May the God of Israel that have cleansed us with His blood keep us to the end and those who have not accepted Jesus Christ as their LORD and SAVIOR please do so today because you don’t know tomorrow. Heaven is real and Hell is real also. My prayer is that we will be among those that will be with Him in His kingdom in Jesus Name, Amen. Shalom!!!
