Joshua 15:1 says “So this was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families” and this chapter continues to break down the lot of the land that belongs to Judah family by family. The end of the chapter reads “As for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day (v.63).

So it was and so it is for all the different cities that were divided among the children of Israel, the children of Israel could not totally eliminate the original occupants and these people dwell among them till this day. This tells a lot why the children of Israel could not keep up with the standard that God laid down for them. They did not follow the instructions God gave to them through Moses. They were supposed to destroy everything before they occupy the land given. Remember the LORD knew the works of these people were evil, and He had sentenced them to total destruction as His judgment upon them. Out of fear, or not having enough faith, the children of Israel compromised and settled with them. If they believed that God would help them knowing what God had promised, and the fact that Joshua destroyed all the people in the land he conquered, they should have done the same. Refusing to destroy them, the inhabitants became a snare to them, They started to live among the ungodly inhabitants, those who do not know the God of Israel, those who are worshipers of Baal or whatever the name of their gods. The children of Israel could not live a holy life, and they continued to do what was not pleasing to God.

We can see that the people that God wanted to use to show forth His power to the whole world so that they can believe and turn to Him could not deliver the message. This is why Psalm 14:2 says “The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy, there is none that does good, no not one.” This makes it mandatory for a Savior. God Himself came to save us. Jesus said that “He is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one can come to the Father except through Me”, Jesus came to save the whole world (John 3:16) from our sins, so that we can be empowered to live for Him.

Unfortunately many of us are still toiling the path of unrighteousness, the path of destruction that the children of Israel tread. With all the miracles Jesus did among them, yet there were many of them that did not believe in Him, even up till now. Many of us that heard the gospel preached to us, and believed, are not 100% devoted to Him either. We are living a compromised life, we allow so many things to occupy our life and thereby opened door for devil to torment us. He demands total elimination of those things that stand between us and Him. We need to deny ourselves of all the pleasures that are all around us, and focus on Him. This is the message I think He is passing to us at this lock-down period, for so many months we are not able to move around or be engaged in different festivities. But are we using our time to reflect on the goodness of God, that owns the whole world, what awesome God He is, a loving God, a merciful God, the God that could do all things, and to ask for mercy upon us and the whole world so that He can forgive us all our sins?  Is this not the time to bury ourselves in the word of God so that we can move closer to Him?

Let us remember that millions have died as a result of this virus. You and I are not better than those who have died, we are living because of His grace upon our lives. Therefore let us spend our time to move closer to Him by doing what pleases Him Since we do not know what plan He has in this generation with COVID-19, let us do more of evangelism, preach to those who do not know Christ so that they too don’t perish. I pray for all of us that His mighty Hand will move us closer to Him in Jesus Name, Amen. Shalom!
