Joshua 14:1-end–The children of Israel have been given their land by lot according to the word of God through Moses. Here in this chapter Caleb approached Joshua reminding him that forty-five years ago (when he was 40 years of age) Moses sent him as one of the men to spy Kadesh-barnea, and he came back with good report. Now that the LORD had spared his life to be among the occupants of the promised land, he would want Joshua to give him the mountains (Hebron) where the Anakims (giants) dwell, and he believed that the LORD will be with him to drive them out as the LORD had said. So Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to him for an inheritance. Verse 14-15 reads, “Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel,
The Bible always makes it clear that there is reward for those who walk with the LORD wholeheartedly. Right from Genesis to where we are now, we see Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, and Caleb and the faithfulness of God upon their lives. Caleb said I am able to drive them away because “As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me, as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in” (v.11). Daniel 11:32 b says, “Those who know their God shall be strong and shall do exploits.” Caleb knew his God, trusted Him that He would help him even at this time to take over the land of the Giants. Caleb had developed an intimate relationship with the LORD through these years. Even at 85 years, he was ready to face the giants because God was with him. He fought the giants and won. What a wonderful God we serve! He wants us to put all our trust in Him completely like Caleb.
All these experiences should empower us to build on the faith of the earlier fathers who walked with God and succeeded. We have no reason to allow our faith to waiver. If they held on to God in the midst of all their troubles, we too should do the same. Only those who persevere to the end shall be saved. Caleb and Joshua were the only ones out of their generation that entered the promised land because they wholly followed the LORD. Let your song be “I have decided to follow Jesus, I have decided to follow Jesus, (2x), No turning back, No turning back. The world behind me, the Cross before me, (2x) No turning back, No turning back.” I pray today that the God of Israel will continue to be with us, His presence will go with us anywhere we go in Jesus Name, Amen! Shalom!!!
