I am using this medium to ask God for mercy over my country Nigeria. Since we became independent from the rule under the British empire, October 1, 1960, this country has not enjoyed peace, either from outside or from within. It has been from one turmoil to the other, politically, socially, religiously or otherwise. Even after some of our leaders are known intellectually all over the world for their brilliance, none of them could help to put Nigeria on a platform of peace. Some leaders known to be fathers of faith in this country could not help to stabilize and unify this country as one. The Bible says we all have gone astray like sheep without a shepherd. We that believe in Jesus Christ and have made Him our Lord and Savior are not better than those that did not believe. We have all come short of the glory of God.

But we have seen similar situations in the land of Israel that provoked God to the extent that He allowed their enemies to conquer them and take them to their land as captives. Daniel was one of them. Daniel decided to go to God by himself on behalf of his native land, Israel. Let us read his prayers in Daniel 9:3-7 which reads thus “And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love Him, and to them that keep His commandments; We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments; Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land,—–Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the LORD’s sake…” This prayer of Daniel speaks volumes because the sins of the children of Israel warranted a 70 year punishment in captivity.

Today I am reflecting on all the sins of this nation too with all our atrocities and innocent blood that have been shed on this land. Yesterday, October 20, 2020 witnessed another massacre because of protests by the youth of the nation. The LORD sees and the LORD knows why we are going through all these. Let us plead for MERCY because we don’t deserve anything from God as our sins are beyond measure. But MERCY rules over judgment, therefore let us cry for MERCY. It is only His mercy that can make His face to shine upon us again. It is only His MERCY that can restore us back to our normal state. The nation is burning now, please LORD quench the fire and bring peace again. Remember you do not want sinners to perish but to come to repentance. Bring us all to yourself again, because it is through YOUR LIGHT that we can see light. Thank you Father for forgiving all our sins and tempering JUSTICE with MERCY., AMEN.
