Joshua 8:1-end-The chapter began with instruction to Joshua on the way to deal with the people of Ai assuring him not to fear because they have been delivered into their hands. Joshua followed the instructions and the place was totally conquered and burnt down to ashes. Twelve thousand fell that day, men and women, only cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according to the word of the LORD which He commanded Joshua. The king of Ai was hanged on a tree and his carcass was cast at the entering of the gate of the city, while a great heap of stones were placed on top of the carcass and it remains there unto this day.
According to what Moses commanded, Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal on which they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then Joshua wrote a copy of the law of Moses upon the stones of the altar. Then as Moses commanded, half of the congregation were on mount Ebal and half on mount Gerizim. And he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
Joshua did not leave anything out that Moses commanded him to do once they crossed Jordan. The two cities he conquered, Jericho and Ai, were carried out according to all the instructions given to him. He learnt from the life of Moses, that obedience is better than sacrifice. Moses succeeded by following God’s instructions step by step, and Joshua did the same thing in these two cities. We will see the same pattern in all other cities they conquered. If we can develop the same attitude of listening to God and obeying Him while He directs us, our lives will be more meaningful. Many of us do not take 1 John 4:4 that says “Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world seriously. If we focus on the WORD and allow it to dwell in us RICHLY, we would be hearing Him as He speaks to us. With the WORD in our hearts, and in our mouth, we will hear Him and then obeying Him will be easy for us. Once we put this into practice, we will be hearing Him more and more and then our relationship with Him will build up to the level He desires. You can imagine the relationship that our Lord Jesus built with His apostles, with John putting his head on His chest. What a fellowship. No wonder the depth of the knowledge of the future that was revealed to him. was astounding. Do you desire to have as much knowledge as the one revealed to Daniel? The LORD called him, a man greatly beloved, which shows the level of intimacy that Daniel attained by his daily devotion to Him.
This level of intimacy with my beloved Master is my desire in this my remaining years on earth. I want to walk with God like Joshua, Daniel, apostle John and apostle Paul. Each of them desired to know Him more, love Him more and serve Him more. I pray for this grace for myself and for you my readers, so that we can enjoy the fellowship with Him here while we wait for our crown in heaven in Jesus’ Name, Amen. Shalom!!!
