Joshua 5:1-end-This is the chapter that explains the name, “Gilgal”, where they settled after crossing over the Jordan on dry ground. The LORD told them to circumcise all the male children that were born in the wilderness because all those circumcised before leaving Egypt have now been replaced by their children during the forty years of their wanderings in the wilderness. The LORD now told Joshua after they have finished circumcising all the people, that “This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you.” Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.” (v. 9). They also observed the Passover and ate the old corn on the land where they settled, and the manna from heaven ceased from thereon. Here in this chapter, we are told that while they were still by the side of Jericho that Joshua lifted his eyes and saw an angel of the LORD whom Joshua approached and asked him if he was for them or for their adversary. The angel said “Nay” but he has come as captain of the LORD of hosts. As Joshua fell down to worship him, he said what does he have for him, to which the angel told him to take off his shoes as he was standing on holy ground. Joshua did so.

The pattern I see in all these leaders, is that there is always an encounter with heaven before they carry out their God-given assignment. Here is Joshua after the first breakthrough of crossing the Jordan on dry ground, and had also done the circumcision of all the male children, the LORD sent His angel to him. We were never told how Joshua had been receiving his messages from the LORD, but to confirm that He was the chosen vessel, he also had similar experience, though not to the same degree, but the LORD told him too to take off his shoes (just like Moses) because he was standing on holy ground. I believe it is a sign of asking the servant, Joshua (and Moses during his time) to humble himself under the mighty hand of God. That is to say, they should surrender to the LORDSHIP of the Most High God who is in absolute control. The interesting part of this revelation is that the angel says he is not for him nor his adversary, which means he is on the side of whoever will do the will of God. The LORD fights the battle of those who are obedient to Him. We saw Joshua saying to him, “what do you want me to do, I am ready” This is the state every leader should aspire to attain, which is the state of complete surrender. You should not think of yourself as anything before God, everything we have achieved was enabled by God, He should get all the glory even when you are telling the story of what you have done, still let praises fill your mouth for being used as a vessel of honor.

I would say the COVID-19 is a reproach to us in this generation. With our obedience I believe the LORD will roll away the reproach of the COVID-19 from us in the Name of Jesus and  we will live to testify of His goodness and His mercies  in this year 2020 that had witnessed thousands of death all over the world. I believe this virus is part of the reproach of Egypt where so many plagues were witnessed by the people of Egypt as God was showing forth His power to them.  As God rolled away death and diseases that followed the children of Israel as they traveled from Egypt, because so many of them died too, not in Egypt but on their way because of their disobedience, so also God will look unto us with mercy and roll this pandemic away from us so that we can live and not die and declare the glory of the LORD in the land of the living, in the Name of Jesus, Amen. Let us continue to pray for Him to step into the affairs of every family, every nation, and every individual and make us right with Him. May His Name be praised for ever and ever, Amen!!!
