Deuteronomy 24:1-end -The chapter addressed their relationship with their wives that they could write a bill of divorcement for her and send her to her father’s house. Let us read it the way it is written “When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.(v.1)
In the New testament, the Pharisees brought this up to Jesus, if it was okay to divorce his wife according as Moses. Let us read the conversation between them: “The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? 4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. 7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? 8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. 10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. 11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.(Matthew 19:3-11).
This scripture put my mind at rest concerning some of the commandments that were given to the children of Israel and what we do today. Jesus came to set things in order. He said it was not so in the beginning. In the beginning it was Adam that God created and later God created Eve because He saw that it was not good for Adam to be alone, and the Bible says “the man will leave his father’s house and cleave to his wife and they shall become one. But because of the hardheartedness of the children of Israel, Moses allowed them to divorce their wives. Now we can see how things change because of different situations. The truth of the matter is things are never the same again when the marital oath is broken and divorce takes place. It affects the entire family, the children are tossed here and there between the two families, and teaching the children the way of the LORD becomes a problem because certain things cannot be taught right since the parents are not living it. When the children face their own difficulties, there is nothing the children can fall back on as examples to follow.
In my own opinion, divorce or separation causes more damage than good. I believe God’s intention is to keep all of us together in perfect peace despite the fact that we have different temperaments, likes and dislikes, He knows it is possible because love conquers all situations. 1 Corinthians 13 says “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not [b]puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, [c]thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.8 Love never fails. Therefore it was love that was absent in a relationship that ended in divorce. My prayer is that the fire of love between you and your spouse will be rekindled with fire of Holy Spirit and you will enjoy your God given spouse to the end in Jesus Name, Amen. Stay blessed!!!
