Deuteronomy 14:1-29-Chapter 14 focused on three things and they are: (1) Improper mourning (2) Clean and unclean Meat and (3) Tithing. The chapter opens with the saying “You are the children of the LORD your God, you shall not cut yourselves nor shave the front of your head for the dead. For you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.(1-2)
When you recognize who God is, you will agree with me that it is an honor to be called the children of God. The people of Israel are favored because they were chosen above every other nation on the face of the earth. They are therefore required to live a holy life. Genesis 17:1-2 reads “When Abram was 99 years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God, walk before Me and be blameless. And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly” Every covenant God made with Abraham came to pass. The descendants of Abraham are as numerous as the sand of the sea shore. God continues to remind them that they are no ordinary people because of His covenant with their ancestors and therefore they must continue to keep themselves holy, not following the rituals of cutting or shaving themselves for the dead. In fact touching the dead makes them unclean throughout the day until they cleanse themselves in the evening. The type of meat to eat are listed in the chapter and the ones to avoid because they are unclean. The matter of tithing was mentioned again here and God made it compulsory for them because they are honoring God with their substance when they do so. They also must not forget the Levites because they do not have their own inheritance. God is their inheritance.
As we continue to go through Deuteronomy we are seeing the plan of God concerning the whole world through the lens of the children of Israel. His plan is that we will be brought to the knowledge of God, knowing what He wants and doing what is right before Him. We share in His nature when He says in Genesis, “Let us make man in our image.” An image has many things in common with the original. We are supposed to do many things like Him. Unfortunately we were messed up by our sins in the garden of Eden and things were not the same again, because we became unclean. Starting again with the children of Israel, He wanted them to return to that state of holiness where they will walk with Him like Adam and Eve before their fall. Paul declares in Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. We have to present our bodies holy to God. Our mind, our conversation, our actions must be according to the perfect will of God. This is why we need to be filled with His Spirit on a daily basis because our flesh is the cog in the wheel. We need to allow God to help us crucify it. Paul says I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live yet not I, but Christ lives in me.(Gal 2:20). When Christ lives in us, our flesh can be truly subjected to His leading. Let us take the advice that was given to Joshua in His book (1:8) which says we should meditate on the book of the law day and night, so that we may observe to do according to all that is written therein. By doing this we are living a perfect and blameless life. May the LORD perfect everything that concerns us in Jesus Name Amen. Remain blessed!!!
