Deuteronomy 1:1-end –The Book of Deuteronomy is an account of what Moses spoke to the children of Israel as the LORD led them from Egypt through the wilderness until they were now about to enter the promised land. Moses was recounting their movement, their disobedience and their punishment for not believing God.
Chapter 1 started with “These are the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this of Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red Sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab, (There are eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea) (1-2). Horeb was the place where they spent some time meeting the LORD and getting to know Him. It was the first place where Moses had an encounter in the burning bush (Exodus 3:1). As they left Egypt, it was this place they settled, encamped around the mountain, and God brought water from the rock for them to drink (Moses was asked to strike the rock) (Exodus 17:6), and Moses went up to receive the Ten Commandment in this place and before he came back the children of Israel had stripped themselves of their ornaments for Aaron to make a calf for them to worship. (Exodus 33:6).
Moses wrote in verse 2 of the distance from Horeb to Kadesh -barnea as eleven days journey. . Kadesh-barnea was close to the land of Canaan, the promised land. This was where the twelve men were sent to go and spy the land and when they came back ten people brought evil report that led to breakdown of order and wanted to stone Moses and Aaron and also Joshua and Caleb who encouraged them to move forward.
The next verse in Deuteronomy 1:3 now says “And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, in the first day of the month)” Moses wanted us to know that after leaving Horeb (where they had spent a long time supposedly), by the eleventh day they were in Kadesh -barnes which was very close to their promised land, Thus it would have been a matter of few days, and they would have been enjoying the land of promise, if not for their disobedience or unbelief that made them spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness. Do we get the picture that Moses was painting for us? Do we not see that the result of disobeying God is costly? They wandered in the wilderness until the whole generation died and were replaced by their children.
God is God of promises, and He keeps promises if only we can put our TRUST in Him. He never fails. Despite all the atrocities of the children of Israel, here they are now getting ready to cross over and Moses was giving them a rundown of all that happened in their forty years of sojourn in the wilderness. Brothers and sisters, let us learn from the children of Israel and be determined to FEAR God, and run away from anything that is evil, The pandemic situation that we are in now is as a result of our waywardness, untruthfulness, and unrighteousness. If only we can turn from our evil ways, and humble ourselves, repent of our sins, and seek His Face, He would heal our land and restore our blessings back to us Let us change our ways and be determined to please Him in all that we do. The LORD will give us the grace to walk with Him to the end in Jesus Name, Amen. Remain Blessed!!!
