Numbers 22:23-35–The power of God was displayed in these next verses that confounded me and any reader of the Bible. The angel of the LORD stood on the way with a sword in his hand and trying to kill Balaam or to put it in a very simple way, to prove to Balaam that he did not approve his going to meet the king. The ass saw the angel but the prophet did not see him. Verse 23 says, “When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it to get it back on the road. 24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again. 26 Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat it with his staff. 28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times? (NIV–donkey, KJV–ass)

So we can see the tussle between the ass and the angel. Balaam who did not know that the ass was preventing him from being killed whipped the ass three times for this unseemingly behavior. Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, to speak. These two things that happened to the ass brought me to my knees to ask God to open my spiritual eyes to behold things of the spirit. Is this not wonderful that God could make ass see and speak? What can He not do? Even the prophet of God could not see what was going on until the LORD opened his eyes. Before the LORD opened his eyes, he had a little conversation with his ass. The ass was surprised that he was receiving this beating from Balaam who should have known him as a trusted ride since he’s being with him. That is to say, “Something caused what you witnessed today Balaam”.. Then the LORD opened his eyes to see the angel, standing in the way, with his sword drawn..then Balaam bowed down his head and fell flat on his face to show his total surrender to the LORD’s will. The angel told him that he came to withstand him “because his way is perverse before Him” (v32).

Things of this world have made many of us sin against God. 1John 2:15-17 says “ Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.  For everything in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.  The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. No wonder God made him a prophet to his people because he was doing the will of the Father. But now, because of the gift he was promised, he went against God’s wish with the mind of obeying man rather than God. Anyway, he was ready to turn back if it displeased the LORD. But the LORD told him to go and “he would only speak whatever He tells him to speak” (V 35).

Why is the world going through this chaotic situation today? It is because of “the goodies” of the world that people are running after. In the process, we forget the True Blesser, who blesses without adding sorrow to it, God showed Balaam that it was utter disobedience going on that journey to curse those that were already blessed. Many of us daily focus on what does not last, What can any of us do without God? What can He not do for us? He opened the eyes of the ass and spoke through him. He has proven Himself once again as the only God who has all things in His control. If we place our trust in Him, we will enjoy Him to the end.  Another lesson to learn from this section is that the reputation of Balaam was through the same God, God of Israel, that owns the whole world. God was the one backing him up when he blessed or cursed people. Therefore nobody can harm you if God does not support him. He says “No weapon formed against you shall ever prosper,”  (Isaiah 54:17)

Children of God let us do God’s will. Let us be on the LORD’s side by loving Him and obeying His commandments so that we can experience His manifold blessings that He has for us. Amen. Shalom!!!
