In Leviticus 23, the feasts of the Lord were enumerated. The Sabbaths (verse 2), then the Passover and the Unleavened Bread (14th and 15th day of the first month respectively) {verses 4-8}, Feast of Firstfruits {verses 9-14} where the sheaf of the firstfruits shall be brought to the priest who shall wave it before the Lord the day after the Sabbath. The person shall not eat bread, parched grain or fresh grain until that day that the offering is made to God. Then the Lord asked them to count 7 Sabbaths after the sheaf of the wave offering was made, then 50 days after the 7th sabbath, they shall offer new grain offering, burnt offering, sin offering, and peace offering, and this represents the Feast of Weeks.{verses 15-25}. Next to this is the Day of Atonement which is the 10th day of the 7th month. They shall afflict their souls and also offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. 15th day of the same 7th month, is declared as the Feast of Tabernacle which they will celebrate for 7 days.

Let’s read this “Also on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the fruit of the land, you shall keep the feast of the Lord for seven days; on the first day there shall be a sabbath-rest, and on the eighth day a sabbath-rest.  And you shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruit of beautiful trees, branches of palm trees, the boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. You shall keep it as a feast to the Lord for seven days in the year. It shall be a statute forever in your generations. You shall celebrate it in the seventh month.  You shall dwell in booths for seven days. All who are native Israelites shall dwell in booths,  that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.’ ”{verses 39-43}.

These feasts serve to keep in remembrance all the good things that the children of Israel enjoyed from their God. These feasts also keep their focus on Him so that they do not stray away from Him. I do not know if they still adhere to this statutes and ordinances, but as we will see later on when they sinned against God and they were taken in captivity, they could not continue their celebration but as soon as they were restored back to their land, they celebrated the Passover and the feast of the unleavened bread with joy.  I do not have knowledge of what they do today, but the important part of these feasts is that their heart is renewed toward God in all these celebrations. The Christians today celebrate Christmas season and Easter season which are the major celebrations to mark the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Death and Resurrection of our Lord and Savior. We should know the essence of any feast we celebrate. For example, Christmas season has been turned into season of exchange of gifts, without emphasizing the purpose of His coming into the world. There is no Christmas without Christ, and there is no salvation without His coming into the world. Each time we celebrate these two seasons, let us reflect deeply on the cause and effect of our Lord Jesus Christ on the Earth. His coming to the world has greatly affected the human race either we want to admit it or not. Those who are not Christians are still under the calendar of Jesus Christ ‘s departure from the earth (A.D-After the Death). .

If God could command the children of Israel to remember to celebrate these feasts, it is a thing of joy to Him if we can set things aside and come before Him in Thanksgiving at all times. Psalm 100 says “Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!  Serve the Lord with gladness;  Come before His presence with singing.  Know that the Lord, He is God;  It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;  We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.  Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,  And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good;  His mercy is everlasting,  And His truth endures to all generations.” May the Lord release the spirit of praise and thanksgiving into our lives to appreciate Him  for who He is and for all He has done for us, in Jesus Name, Amen. Remain blessed.!!!
