And the Lord said to Moses: “Take sweet spices, stacte and onycha and galbanum, and pure frankincense with these sweet spices; there shall be equal amounts of each. You shall make of these an incense, a compound according to the art of the perfumer, salted, pure, and holy. And you shall beat some of it very fine, and put some of it before the Testimony in the tabernacle of meeting where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. But as for the incense which you shall make, you shall not make any for yourselves, according to its composition. It shall be to you holy for the Lord. Whoever makes any like it, to smell it, he shall be cut off from his people.” (Exodus 30:35-38).
We are on the last instruction as the Lord told Moses to prepare incense that will be placed before the Testimony in the Tabernacle of meeting. Incense when burned produces sweet smell and our God wants the incense made from the list above. Sweet smelling spices before the Lord shows the nature of the God that created the heavens and the earth. He is a holy God and everything around him must be sweet and attracting. The people that God created are supposed to be a sweet aroma to Him. We are created to praise and worship Him. When we do this, we are like sweet aroma to Him. In Genesis 8, we were told what Noah did after the deliverance of his family from the destruction by flood, and the Bible says “Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma. Then the Lord said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.” God was pleased with the offering Noah offered in appreciation of what God did for him and his family. Smelling these beautiful aroma made God to change His mind never to curse the ground for man’s sake or destroy every living thing because of the evil imagination of man’s heart. If human beings can sit back and think of their very existence which they had no power over, they would be able to give quality praise and thanksgiving to the Almighty God for the great work He is doing among us. This also should motivate us to live a life that is pleasing unto Him because He created us for Himself to bring glory to His Name. We can liken this to the joy that a parent has when his child performs beautifully well in school or in any particular career. The success of a child makes parents proud which is a sweet aroma to them.
Therefore let us make a special effort to be a sweet aroma to our God in all that we do. He wants our Light to shine forth so that the people around us can praise God too on our behalf. May the Lord continue to make us a shinning example of a life that is worthy of His praise. Amen.
