ON THE MOUNTAIN WITH GOD
Then Moses went up, also Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they saw the God of Israel. And there was under His feet as it were a paved work of sapphire stone, and it was like the very heavens in its clarity. But on the nobles of the children of Israel He did not lay His hand. So they saw God, and they ate and drank. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and be there; and I will give you tablets of stone, and the law and commandments which I have written, that you may teach them.” So Moses arose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up to the mountain of God. And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we come back to you. Indeed, Aaron and Hur are with you. If any man has a difficulty, let him go to them.” Then Moses went up into the mountain, and a cloud covered the mountain. Now the glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. The sight of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel. So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights. (Exodus 24:9-18).
God had made it clear from this passage, that He can appear to us in any form.To the elders of Israel and Aaron with his children, they saw God and described the way His feet looked, and they did not die because God of heaven wanted them to see that much. God called on Moses to come up to the mountain but later we are told that Moses went with Joshua his assistant, leaving the elders behind. Then Joshua was left behind a little further up, while Moses alone went to the presence of God, and cloud covered him. While Moses was covered with the cloud, the way the glory of the Lord was manifested to the children of Israel was like “consuming fire on the top of the mountain”. The gradual progression, from the Aaron and the elders, to Joshua and Moses, and then to Moses, reminded me of a similar trend when Jesus was with His disciples. He had the disciples, then the 12 apostles, and then the three closest ones, Peter, James and John, when it comes to some privacy matters. Therefore one has to understudy people around us to know those that one can really trust to carry out some important assignments. We should always seek God’s wisdom in this regard because we human beings look at the outward appearance while God sees the heart, and knows what man is capable of doing, Also the fire, the cloud and the sapphire feet are not enough to start figuring out the image of God. God does not want any image made and therefore we must remember that He is Spirit and He can appear to us in any form.
Moses was in the mountain for forty days and forty nights. The primary purpose was that God wanted to give to him, the tablets of stone and the law and the commandments which He had written to teach the children of Israel. Though Moses was with God, he did not describe any form in which God revealed Himself to him, but the subsequent chapters revealed all that God showed him concerning the way to prepare a place of worship for Him, which is called, the Sanctuary. What is important in this section is that God had chosen Moses as the one to build a Sanctuary for Him and the Sanctuary has to be according to the pattern shown to him. God is very specific and detailed oriented. His things must be done in the way He wanted them done. That justifies the saying in Isaiah 55:8-9 ““For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” When you read through chapters 26, 27, 28, and 29, you will see the extensive details of all the materials and wares to be put together and the purpose of each one. To round up this chapter I will want to inform you that the new testament informs us that we are the sanctuary of God, 1 Corinthians 3:16 says “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? Therefore we need to understudy carefully the chapters that follow and ask for understanding of the minute details that God described to Moses to be able to construct the physical temple (sanctuary) to His satisfaction. As we will read in the chapters that follow, everything was done according to His commands. My prayer is that we will live to please the Lord, that is, everything we do will be to His glory in the mighty Name of Jesus, Amen. Remain blessed!!!.
