JUSTICE FOR ALL
The last verse in Exodus 22 expresses the kind of people God wants the children of Israel to be to Him. He wants them to be different from the people of the world. He says ““And you shall be holy men to Me: you shall not eat meat torn by beasts in the field; you shall throw it to the dogs.” (Exodus 22:31). Wickedness had taken hold of the world because of their sinful nature and He says, “I am raising you up to be Holy, to be like Me, and not like the rest of the world.” God is a HOLY God. He told Abraham their forefather, “Walk before Me and be perfect” He wants all His children to be perfect, that is, to do what is Right at all times. Let us see the continuation of doing what is Right as is recorded in Exodus 23 which reads thus “You shall not circulate a false report. Do not put your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice. You shall not show partiality to a poor man in his dispute. “If you meet your enemy’s ox or his donkey going astray, you shall surely bring it back to him again. If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying under its burden, and you would refrain from helping it, you shall surely help him with it. “You shall not pervert the judgment of your poor in his dispute. Keep yourself far from a false matter; do not kill the innocent and righteous. For I will not justify the wicked. And you shall take no bribe, for a bribe blinds the discerning and perverts the words of the righteous. “Also you shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the heart of a stranger, because you were strangers in the land of Egypt. Exodus 23:1-9).
Reading through this Word of God to the children of Israel makes my heart to bleed. God did not create us to be hostile and wicked to ourselves. Every line that I read speaks of LOVE. He is saying “LOVE ONE ANOTHER WHETHER POOR OR RICH” Do not partake in anything that is evil, do not spread false report, or be a false witness, just to pervert justice. It does not matter who is involved in a dispute, let TRUTH prevail. Do not take sides, or be partial. It is because many people of this world are GUILTY in all these behaviors that have made the anger of God to rise on human race. This is what God was trying to correct by setting up a nation to Himself to behave in a godly manner to show example to the world. He says if you see your enemies’ ox or donkey going astray, do not bypass it as if it does not concern you, do whatever you can to help him. You must do everything with good conscience because you are not like them. Keep yourself from false matter, and do not aid and abet God says He will not justify the wicked. Therefore the wicked will always incur the wrath of God. He also says they must not take bribe because bribe blinds the discerning and perverts the words of the righteous. The bribe will not allow you to think right because you have automatically develop a soft spot for such a person, and you will be feeling guilty if you don’t favor that person. So bribe will pervert justice. Therefore one should stay away from receiving bribe. A stranger must not be oppressed because God hates such behavior. This is to confirm the fact that we are all created equal, and the whole universe belongs to God alone as He says in Psalm 24, :The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof”.
All the instructions that He gave to the children of Israel are our own guidelines to help us navigate this planet and leave a godly mark. If all of us can dwell with each other without obstructing justice, and be fair in our dealings with each other, this world be better place to live in. Our Lord Jesus Christ came to the earth for the purpose of showing us the way to live for God. All His teachings are the same as the commandments.given to the children of Israel on Mount Sinai. Throughout His ministry on earth, He showed Love, forgiveness of sins, and compassionate spirit in His dealings with everyone. He healed the sick, the lame, the blind, He set many captives free, and mended many broken relationships. So we have a role model to follow. His teachings are timeless and Paul in his epistle says “imitate me as I follow Christ” Matthew 11:29-30 gave us the words of Jesus that says “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
The conclusion of this section is that those of us who know what is ‘good and right” in the sight of God, let us do it so that it can be well with us. 2 Chronicles16:9 says “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.” Also He says in Revelation 22 ““And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie. “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.” And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely. (12-17).
I have more scriptures quoted for you in this write up than before because it is what we need to help us stay focused on our purpose in life. God bless you all.
