The focus today will be on the words spoken by God to the children of Israel, which is ““You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.” In Amplified version it says “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain [that is, irreverently, in false affirmations or in ways that impugn the character of God]; for the Lord will not hold guiltless nor leave unpunished the one who takes His name in vain [disregarding its reverence and its power]. (Exodus 20:7). Proverbs 18:10 says “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous runs to it and is safe and set on high [far above evil]. Philippians 2:9-11 says ” For this reason also [because He obeyed and so completely humbled Himself], God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,  so that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow [in submission], of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,  and that every tongue will confess and openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord (sovereign God), to the glory of God the Father..

With these two references, we can see the Power, the Glory, the Majesty, the Honor, the Prestige associated with the name of God. In the Old Testament, there was so much respect to the name of God that they could not mention that name. They used the name YAHWEH, with no vowels as a sign of respect.(YHWH) to the Almighty God, the God that came down in form of fire.on Mount Sinai. The God that performed so many signs and wonders in Egypt. The God that rained manna from heaven and brought water from the rock for His people to drink. The God that parted the Red Sea and drowned the Egyptians in the Sea. Therefore He is saying to the children of Israel “My Name is to be reverenced” Because God is Holy, His Name can not be associated with falsehood or evil. For example you cannot lie and back it up with the name of God of Heaven, God will not allow anyone who does that to go free without any form of punishment. It is better to fear God than to fear man.

In the New Testament, our Lord Jesus Christ who came to the world as God in the flesh, was also given a Name that is above any other name . The quotation in the Philippians above tells us that His Name should be reverenced. Every knee should bow down to His Name and every tongue should confess Him as Lord. In the same vein, you can not bear false witness in His Name. In John 14:6 He declares that He is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” His Name has been used to perform many miracles because the Apostles used His Name to raise the dead, to heal the sick, to open blind eyes, and for lame to walk. Therefore His Name represents Jesus Himself, and when you call upon His Name, you are calling Him. He is the Truth, therefore there is no lie in Him. Truth and Lie cannot coexist together or go hand in hand. If you find yourself not being able to speak the truth, then you need the Spirit of truth to indwell you. John 15:26 says “But when the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of Truth who comes from the Father, He will testify and bear witness about Me.” If the Spirit of Christ is in you, you will not fear what man can do unto you , but you will rather fear God and speak the truth all the time no matter what. Once you are in the habit of speaking the truth, then you will not have to swear in the name of God to back up your words. People will be able to trust your words. Godly advice will come from you because you are speaking the word of God.

Mark 16:15-18 says ”  And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believes not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” These are the words of our Lord Jesus Christ to His Apostles and also to all of us believers today that we can preach the gospel to every creature and those that believed and baptized shall be saved, and signs shall follow those that believe. Many of us have used His Name, and miracles have happened. Therefore the Name of Jesus should be called whenever we need Him to come to our rescue, to heal the sick, to cast out devils or to open blind eyes, or any other need,  but we should not call Him jokingly or with no respect. He is God and we must remember this and give Him all the Honor and the Glory that He deserves. May His Name be magnified in our lives as we continue tomorrow on the other commandments. Remain blessed.
