THE LORD SPOKE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
And God spoke all these words, saying: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. “You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery. “You shall not steal. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”(Exodus 20:1-17).
The children of Israel heard the voice of God from heaven as audibly as if they were speaking to themselves. God came down to shower this blessing upon them as the people of God. He loves them so much and made it known to them that He is their God, and He was the one that brought them out of bondage. Therefore they should not make any form of image to represent Him, because nothing can represent Him. Thinking of the different image people make and worship, what on earth went wrong that brought people to that point. Everything we can see or cannot see are created by Him. What can be used to represent Him? The thousands of different species of birds in the air, the multitude of aquatic animals (fishes and the like) in the seas, the different animals in the forest, different types of vegetation that exist are all the works of His Hand.. Which one can one liken Him to. It makes me wonder how people can create or fashion a figure with what God created like gold, silver, or wood and call it god. Some worship stone, sun, moon, animal, rivers just to mention a few. What in the world turned their senses upside down? I think what Satan did in the garden of Eden messed every one up and we were cut off spiritually from God. The Light of God that was supposed to shine in us for illumination became darkened and we do not have any understanding of God anymore (this was the death God was referring to when He said, the day you eat this forbidden fruit you will die).
This was the state all mankind were before our Lord Jesus Christ came, and He is now the Light that lightened our life in order to open our understanding to the truth of the gospel. John 1:4 says “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. Therefore if we don’t have Him (Christ) in us, we will be in the state explained by Paul in Romans 1: 20-22 ” For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Until we allow Jesus into our lives, we can never do right. He said in John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” When we abide in Him, we will not do foolish things because our thoughts and our actions will be pure. Knowing what the children of Israel eventually turned to, made me to understand the reason why God took His time to explain to them NEVER TO CREATE ANY IMAGE to bow down to. This became their major problem as we will see in later chapters or books.
The very purpose for separating Abraham from his family was to use him to make God known to mankind, because the world had been populated with different kinds of gods that people worship and sacrificed their children to. Of course the source of the worship of these idols is not farfetched, it has to be from the devil who initiated the revolt from the garden of Eden. We will continue from here tomorrow as we will be looking at the ten commandments in detail as we go through the Bible. The Lord will give us more insight into His word and we will not fall into the same mistakes that the children of Israel fell into. God be with us all. Amen.
