THE LORD CAME DOWN ON THE MOUNT

So Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him.  Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” So Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord.  And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in the thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.”  So Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.  Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes.  And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.  You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death.  Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with an arrow; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain.” So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes.  And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not come near your wives.”(Exodus 19:7-15).

The coming down of God upon the mountain in such a manner to show Himself to the children of Israel was never experienced by Abraham, nor Isaac nor Jacob. Neither was there any record of this again in any section of the Bible. Indeed the children of Israel were a special treasure to God. He considered them worthy to see Him in the form that He wanted to be seen. The God that created the earth and the heaven and all that are there in. The power of His words alone brought everything to existence. He spoke and it came to pass. The sun, the moon and the stars and all the planets are the work of His Hands. The children of Israel should consider themselves blessed for this honor accorded them. All they were asked to do for Him to appear to them was to wash  and consecrate themselves for three days. That is they should make themselves pure or holy and abstain from any form of pleasure (sex) or sin. They should also not touch the base of the mountain or else they would die. Moses gave the instruction to them and they adhered to every command to them. They were indeed ready to receive Him.

I wish it were possible to receive Him the same way today. Would that make a lot of difference in the way we relate to Him today? Unfortunately those who witnessed this appearance and hearing His voice were so terrified that they pleaded with Moses to bring His message only to them because they do not want to die. Let us read from the scriptures what happened. “Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.  And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.  Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.  And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by voice.  Then the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. (Exodus 19:16-20).

God came down to the mountain in the midst of thundering, lightning, thick cloud and sound of the trumpet (very loud), The smoke rose high like the smoke of a furnace and the mountain quaked greatly. What a mighty and fearful experience. God came down in fire. That is why the Bible says :God is a consuming fire” The people were scared and did not move close to the mountain. After the loud sound of the trumpet, Moses spoke and the Lord answered him by voice. So the children of Israel heard the voice of God. This is awesome. God did all this to prove Himself to them that He is their God and to put fear in them so that they don’t sin against Him. The same God that appeared in this form is the same God that we serve today. With all that we have read that happened to the Egyptians and the various other miracles that He performed while meeting the needs of  His people and now the physical manifestation of His presence on the mountain are more than enough evidence to prove who He is, the “I AM that I AM” The One that is ever present, that has no beginning nor has an end, the Alpha and the Omega, the Eternal One. I bow down before you in fear and trembling and say to You that created me “Thank You for giving me the opportunity to know You ” I am happy that I am not senseless to be worshiping “stone, trees, animals, sun/moon or any form of image that cannot talk or reason.”  Please, my God, I want You to visit me like you did to the children of Israel and I know my life will not remain the same again. Brothers and sisters, I pray the same prayer for you so that you can experience a turn around for good in your own journey in life. May you remain blessed.!
