VICTORY OVER THE AMALEKITES

Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.  And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.”  So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.  And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.  But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.  So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.”  And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner; for he said, “Because the Lord has sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.” (Exodus 17:8-16).

Joshua was given the assignment to fight the Amalekites while Moses held His rod up in his hand. When the rod was lifted high Joshua was winning and when the rod was down, the Amalekites had upper hand. It became necessary for the rod to be constantly held up but because of weariness Aaron and Hur had to support Moses to steady his hands so that Joshua could defeat the Amalekites. Every step of the way God allows us to learn lessons that could enhance our growth and success in all that we do. God could have defeated the Amalekites without involving the children of Israel if he desired to do so. Also He could have done it without Moses lifting the rod up to heaven. Therefore in my own opinion, it was to show us what we can achieve when we work together in unity, Joshua had victory over the Amalekites because Aaron and Hur helped to stabilize the hand of Moses. Reference was made to “unity” in Genesis 11:5-6 which says ”  But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.  And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.” This is the purpose of unity. When we are united we are able to defeat our enemies, and achieve greater success in whatever we set our minds to do.

Imagine the prayer of agreement between husband and wife, or between two people of the same mind and see the turn of events in whatever their prayers are centered on. Matthew 18:19-20 says ” Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.  For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” This means we have been short-changing ourselves by not uniting together to get the best out of life. That is the in-road that Satan uses to deprive us of our joy or delay our breakthrough. Most of the problems we face today emanated from disunity among brethren (even in the church), among family members, colleagues, or among husband and wife.  Jesus made reference to this unity in John 17, let’s read ” “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;  that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.  And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:  I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me (22-23). Look at His emphasis on “ONE”. He mentioned it 5 times in these two sentences because where there is unity, there is love radiating among them and then they can be made perfect through love. Just as our Lord Jesus prayed for all believers in John 17, we also want to remind Him that we need more prayers now because things are worse in this generation than before. We pray that He will come down and fill all of us up, and bind us together with strong cords of love that cannot be broken in Jesus Amen. Remain in Him.
