CHILDREN OF ISRAEL DISOBEYED AGAIN

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,  “I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’ ” So it was that quail came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning the dew lay all around the camp.  And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was a small round substance, as fine as frost on the ground.  So when the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.  And Moses said to them, “This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat.  This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: ‘Let every man gather it according to each one’s need, one omer for each person, according to the number of persons; let every man take for those who are in his tent.’ ” Then the children of Israel did so and gathered, some more, some less.  So when they measured it by omers, he who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack. Every man had gathered according to each one’s need.  And Moses said, “Let no one leave any of it till morning.”  Notwithstanding they did not heed Moses. But some of them left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them.(Exodus 16: 11-20)

God fulfilled His promises by sending “Manna” from heaven to feed His people. It was the first time that heaven will open up to release “bread” to the children of men. This goes to show that there can never be any lack for His people. When there was no way in the wilderness, He made a way through the Red Sea. When the water they found was bitter, He made it sweet for them. Now that they ran out of food, he sent meat (quail) in the evening and bread (manna) in the morning. Everyone had their fill. There was instruction as to gathering just enough for each family so that there will not be any “leftover”. What is that teaching us? Remember “Our Lord’s Prayer….which says “Give us this day our daily bread” It is part of depending and trusting God for supply of our daily needs. The children of Israel were being taught this daily dependence on God. Did all of them follow through? No! As usual some gathered more that they could finish, and therefore, there was left over till next morning. Guess What! God showed His power again to them that whatever that was left till next morning could not be eaten because it bred worms and stank. God ‘s instruction must be followed at all times because there will always be consequences for our actions. God was not happy with them for not obeying His instructions and Moses was angry too.

They were also supposed to gather enough on Friday to take care of that day and the next day which was Sabbath day, because they were supposed to observe that Day as a Holy Day to worship God and rest from all work. They did that and on the Sabbath Day, it did not stink nor breed worms. This is a perfect example of a God who is Sovereign over all of His creations. Do you know that some of them still went out on Sabbath Day to check if there were any manna on the field, but they found none? Why are we human beings so stubborn and defiant? What we are not supposed to do , that is exactly what we find ourselves doing? Isn’t this the same offence that Adam and Eve committed in the Garden of Eden, when they were instructed not to touch only one Tree in the middle of the Garden. They defied authority and the consequences was the separation from God and that day they died spiritually. The same sin has been transmitted to us. To obey instruction is a big task to us and we struggle daily to keep our focus on the Author and Finisher of our Faith.

Brothers and sisters what the children of Israel did are common to all of us. We need to ask the Spirit of God to fill us up so as to enable us to follow God’s commandments and ordinances. We have to conquer flesh through the Spirit of God, and that is the only way to please God. Our flesh must be crucified. We must constantly ask for God’s help so that we can enjoy Him here on this planet and also be with Him in His kingdom. The Lord will give us the grace to be the DOER of His Word in Jesus Name, Amen. God bless you.
