So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no water.  Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called ]Marah.   And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”   So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them, and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.” Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters. (Exodus 15:22-27)

After the great miracle of the Red Sea, they were now in the Wilderness of Shur, and they searched for water for 3 days without success. But when they got to a place where they found water they could not drink it because the water was bitter. So they cried unto the LORD, and the Lord came to their rescue by showing them a tree which made the water sweet when cast into water. Here was their first test in the wilderness. God had delivered them from their physical enemies (Pharaoh) and they were now faced with the greatest enemy which is their flesh. Will they be able to overcome their fleshly desires? Let us wait and see. Here they complained against Moses and Moses cried unto the Lord. Flesh is more powerful than Satan. If we can overcome the power of flesh, then devil can not overpower us. Because Joseph could control his flesh, devil could not lure him into sin. So also Daniel had control over his flesh, therefore he was able to avoid defiling himself with the king’s delicacies. When the tempter came to Jesus, because He had control over His flesh, He was able to silence the devil with the word of God. Brothers and sisters, we need to be aware of the damage that the works of flesh had done in the lives of so many servants of God. When a servant of God loves money, women/men or fame, these are the works of flesh and they have been responsible for dragging many ministries into the mud and disgracing the so called servants of God. Romans 8:5-8 says “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Therefore the works of flesh was manifested in them and they started to complain against Moses, forgetting that both of them were in the same predicament. Instead of complaining, they should have turned to the Father and asked for water to drink. God is a merciful God and the moment they cried unto Him, He showed them what to do. Children of God,  life is full of uncertainties and whenever the life turns in the way we least expected, let us trust in the Lord and call on Him for help. He is always with us. All He wanted is for us to depend on Him 24 hours a day and 7 days a week (24/7). Remember that Pillar of Cloud and Pillar of Fire were with them all through the journey but were they aware of His presence?. Also we need to know that God is with us all the time, and He knows what we are going through. He says “Ask and you shall be given, knock and the door shall be opened unto you, seek and you shall find” (Matthew 7:7).  When the children of Israel asked for help, he turned the bitter water to sweet water and then made a statute and an ordinance with them, “that if they can hearken to the voice of God and obey his commandments, he would not put on them any of the diseases He brought on the Egyptians”. After this assurance He brought them to a place (Elim) where there were 12 wells of water and 70 palm trees, and they camped there  for some time. What a time of refreshing in the Lord when their focus was now on Him! So also He has come to give us life and life abundantly if we can focus on Him 24/7. The Lord will meet us at the points of our needs in Jesus Name, Amen. Be blessed!!!
