THE WILDERNESS ROUTE

Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt.  And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had placed the children of Israel under solemn oath, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you.”   So they took their journey from Succoth and camped in Etham at the edge of the wilderness.   And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.   He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.(Exodus 13:17-22).

The scripture says that God purposely changed their route from the way that was shorter, which was the land of Philistines, because the Lord knew they would be intimidated when they meet the Philistines as a first encounter. This might make them want to return to Egypt. Therefore the Lord knows us more than we know ourselves. The Lord was there leading them so He knew what He would do even to make the other way passable. The Lord went with them with pillar of cloud by day and pillar of fire by night. So as He promised His presence was manifested before them all through the journey so whether day or night there was light for them to move from one point to the other. During the day the sunlight was available, but the scripture says there was pillar of cloud which signified His presence., and when it is dark in the night, His presence gave them Light. Therefore this reminds me of our heavenly home where we are told that there would not be need for sun to give light because our Lord will be the Light. Revelations 21:22-27 says “But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.   And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it.   Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there).   And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it.   But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

The scripture really connects itself on this topic of Light. John 1: 6-9 says, “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That  was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.” John 8:12 also says “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”  These scriptures confirm that Jesus is the Light and He was the one that followed the children of Israel in that journey through the wilderness. He is also the Light in the world we are in and He will continue to be the Light in the world to come (in our Heavenly Home). Since we know what Light does and how darkness cannot comprehend it, that is, darkness disappears at the appearance of Light, so also those who follow Jesus are empowered to walk in the Light, and devil has no power over them. Provided we stay on His Word, we can never stumble or fall because Jesus (the Word) shines light on our path, and makes us to know that the path of righteousness is the only path that can lead us to the Heavenly Home.

Brothers and sisters, we should seek to dwell in the presence of God by reading the word of God, and meditating on them. Psalm 119:11 says “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.” If we want to be resident in that beautiful Heavenly Home, we should do everything we can here to run away from sin so that we can live for ever with Jesus who is the Light of the world. I pray that the Lord will continue to shine his Light in us so that our lives can be transformed in Jesus Name, Amen. Be blessed!
