Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,  “Consecrate to Me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and beast; it is Mine.” “And it shall be, when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as He swore to you and your fathers, and gives it to you,  that you shall set apart to the Lord all that open the womb, that is, every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have; the males shall be the Lord’s.  But every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. And all the firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem.  So it shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ that you shall say to him, ‘By strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. And it came to pass, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all males that open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’  It shall be as a sign on your hand and as frontlets between your eyes, for by strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.” (Exodus 13:1-2, 11-16).

The Lord told Moses to set apart all the firstborn, that opens the womb to Him. Setting apart something to God means that person or that animal is for God’s use or purpose. It is a privilege to be a vessel in the hand of God. God who owns the whole world has everything at his disposal. It is an honor to be called a servant of God.  The entire children of Israel represents His firstborn, and we can see how mercilessly He dealt with their enemy (the Egyptians). He also wants the children of Israel to remember what He did for them. He killed the firstborn of the Egyptians (man and beast) in order to buy or pay for their freedom. Thus they must understand the love He has for them and be ready to do anything He asked them to do. So dedicating their firstborn to Him is to reciprocate their love to Him. The firstborn of animals should be sacrificed to Him. Later on in the scriptures, we were told that he replaced all the first born with the children of Levi for the same purpose. So the Levites were the ones solely responsible to the Tabernacle of God, either erecting the Tabernacle or pulling it down since they move from one place to the other, and the setting up of all the tables for use to worship Him, are the works of the lineage of Levi. So we now understand the setting apart for God because some people have to be responsible to do certain things. All of us cannot be head, or hand or leg, the work had to be distributed according to the way He deems fit. The significance of this is for the person to be aware that he has to  walk in obedience to God’s principles and ordinances.Later on we will see how God changed the rules because of the disobedience of the members of this lineage.

What do we have to learn from this consecration or set apart for God? Let us go into other scriptures. Isaiah 52:11 says ” Depart! Depart! Go out from there, Touch no unclean thing; Go out from the midst of her, Be clean, You who bear the vessels of the Lord.” A vessel of God MUST be CLEAN, because God is a HOLY God. We must not touch or eat anything that can make us unclean Anyone who desires to be used by God must desire to live a clean life with no skeleton in his cupboard. He or she must ask for the grace to constantly be empowered to live above flesh, because Flesh is our greatest enemy. The works of flesh can make what is holy to be unholy. Once the flesh is given a chance to be satisfied with its desires, one is set for destruction. Therefore as we read through the scriptures, let us pay attention to those works of flesh in the lives of the chosen vessels, and how these works of flesh messed them up. Let us be like Daniel who was able to put under control the wants of his flesh by refusing the delicacies of the king of Babylon, and asking for only vegetables that could keep his body and soul together. The word of God does greater work in our lives if we can walk in the spirit and the reward is enormous. The Lord will make us a vessel of honor in Jesus Name, Amen. Remain in His Love.
