The Fourth Plague: Flies
And the Lord said to Moses, “Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he comes out to the water. Then say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. Or else, if you will not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand. And in that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, in order that you may know that I am the Lord in the midst of the land. I will [f]make a difference between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall be.” ’ And the Lord did so. Thick swarms of flies came into the house of Pharaoh, into his servants’ houses, and into all the land of Egypt. The land was corrupted because of the swarms of flies. (Exodus 8:20-24)
This fourth plague softened Pharaoh’s heart by asking them to sacrifice in the land (of Egypt) but Moses reminded him that it is an abomination to the Egyptians to do such thing on their land, then he then suggested that should go to the wilderness to do it but not very far , and asked Moses to entreat the LORD to remove the flies. As soon as the flies were removed, Pharaoh’s heart was hardened again and refused to let them go. While I was in Africa, the few flies around me while I was in the kitchen or about to eat always caused a lot of disturbance to us. The noise they made while flying around were very irritating. Now imagine swarms of flies in every nook and corner of Egypt, in the palace, servant’s houses, and everyone’s houses except the section that houses the children of Israel. This punishment can not be tolerated, because peace is physically removed from them. No wonder Pharaoh started to think of letting them do the sacrifice on their land though it was an abomination, because this would be better than swarm of flies. We are not surprised that his mind changed after the removal of the flies because God was not finished with him yet. We have six more plagues to witness before the final release of the children of Israel.
Children of God, the life we have now is an opportunity, and we should use it to serve God in every position we find ourselves. We are supposed to do things that are pleasing unto God. We must not intentionally do things that will harm our neighbors. Our God is God of justice. He says in Revelation 22:11-13 “ He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still.” “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” We are witnesses to the unjust treatment the Egyptians subjected the children of Israel to, and now God was giving it back to them according to what they had done. Now we can examine yourselves and check what ways we had done some form of wickedness to other people? God is faithful, He will bring into our remembrance all that we had done that were not pleasing unto God, and once we ask for pardon, He will forgive us. We do not want the judgment of God upon ourselves but only His MERCIES. Look at the various ways and things he was using to fight the Egyptians. Therefore we should endeavor to seek His favor and be in His good book, especially the “Book of Life” all the days of our lives. Let us keep in our remembrance that one day is coming when this Book of Life would be opened, what shall be said about me or about you would be what we have done on this planet earth. My prayer is that what we shall hear would be “Welcome My dear servant, enter into the joy of the Lord”. This shall be our portion in Jesus Name, Amen. God be with you.
