JACOB BLESSES HIS CHILDREN
And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days. “Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob, And listen to Israel your father. “Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and the beginning of my strength, The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power. Unstable as water, you shall not excel, Because you went up to your father’s bed; Then you defiled it—He went up to my couch. Simeon and Levi are brothers; Instruments of cruelty are in their dwelling place. Let not my soul enter their council; Let not my honor be united to their assembly; For in their anger they slew a man, And in their self-will they hamstrung an ox. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; And their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob
And scatter them in Israel.
“Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise; Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; Your father’s children shall bow down before you. Judah is a lion’s whelp; From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bows down, he lies down as a lion; And as a lion, who shall rouse him? The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people. Binding his donkey to the vine, And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine, He washed his garments in wine, And his clothes in the blood of grapes. His eyes are darker than wine, And his teeth whiter than milk.
As it was the normal practice, Jacob called his sons and gave each of them his last words as it was recorded in Genesis 49. I have included His words for the first four children, which are Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah. Jacob, like his father, really spoke as oracle of God. He said to them, “Come and hear what will happen to you in your last days.” They were God’s mouth piece and this had been their tradition from Abraham, Isaac and now to Jacob. He started with the first born Reuben, who was the beginning of his Might and Strength and the Excellency of his dignity, but passed curse on him instead of blessing because he defiled his father’s bed. What a terrible sin he committed against his father. Later on we were told that, that curse manifested through his lineage until another prophet of God revoked it. As we continue to study the word we shall see this details. This is one of the reasons why sin is a terrible disease like cancer that spreads until it kills.
Simeon and Levi displayed a lot of anger that Jacob mentioned this in his final words to these brothers. Because of their anger, he asked that his honor be not placed on them, and their anger which was cruel, was cursed. Again we knew about Moses who was from the lineage of the Levi, that was known with this anger problem. He also slew an Egyptian because he was maltreating an Israelite. Also the display of this anger prevented him from entering the promised land with the children of Israel. So this anger issue was manifested through the descendants of Simeon and Levi.
Judah, on the other hand received commendation. He said to him “you are the one whom your brothers will praise” He was the fourth son of Leah and when she had him, she said, “Now I will praise the LORD, and she named him Judah”. We can see the significance of names given to our children. Judah was the one that did not allow Joseph to be killed, but rather suggested that he be sold to the Ishmaelites, thus paving a way for him to get to the land of his destiny. Jacob compared him to a lion and that he will overcome all his enemies, and even his brothers will bow down to him. Then he said the scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet. A scepter is an ornamental staff of authority held in the hand by a ruling monarch. Tracing the history of the lineage of Judah, king David emerged, and then our Lord Jesus Christ emerged to take the scepter that can never depart, but become everlasting.chief cornerstone. Our Lord Jesus Christ is usually addressed as the Lion of the tribe of Judah. The verses that followed (11 and 12) were symbolic of what happened to Jesus Christ while he was crucified. The blessings were prophetic, and as we go through each blessing we can see the same trend. Therefore I would say our God uses the blessings pronounced on people to establish each of them. We can also see the power of words coming from people especially from those in authority over us.
The lesson I learned from these series of studies and blessings, is that I should speak words that will impact lives positively. Our Lord Jesus Christ says, “The words that I speak to you they are spirit and they are life.” John 6:63. From Genesis 1, we saw the pronouncement of words and their manifestations. Therefore we all should bless our children, bless family members, and bless people generally. Even if they are doing things that are contrary to the commandments of God, let us still speak words that would deliver them and give them breakthroughs. The Lord will continue to bless you as you read these Daily Words of Wisdom on a daily basis in Jesus Name, Amen. Remain blessed!!!
