JOSEPH REVEALED HIMSELF TO HIS BROTHERS

Joseph now being the governor in the land of Egypt, and in direct contact with everyone that came to buy food in Egypt, was in a position to exercise some authority over his brothers. He did this in order to find out if his brothers have really shown some brokenness since he left them more than twenty years ago. He took them through series of tests especially because they did not recognize him as he spoke to them through an interpreter.  Eventually he revealed himself to them in a very moving and breath-taking scene. Let us read this portion from Genesis 45:1-15 and it reads thus “Then Joseph could not restrain himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, “Make everyone go out from me!” So no one stood with him while Joseph made himself known to his brothers.  And he wept aloud, and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard it.Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph; does my father still live?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed in his presence.   And Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come near to me.” So they came near. Then he said: “I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt.   But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.   For these two years the famine has been in the land, and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting.   And God sent me before you to preserve a posterity for you in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.   So now it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt. “Hurry and go up to my father, and say to him, ‘Thus says your son Joseph: “God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not tarry.   You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near to me, you and your children, your children’s children, your flocks and your herds, and all that you have.   There I will provide for you, lest you and your household, and all that you have, come to poverty; for there are still five years of famine.” ’ “And behold, your eyes and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see that it is my mouth that speaks to you.   So you shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that you have seen; and you shall hurry and bring my father down here.” Then he fell on his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck.   Moreover he kissed all his brothers and wept over them, and after that his brothers talked with him.

This story of Joseph would be unbelievable if somebody told you as a story and it was not in the Bible. You would say “it was too good to be true” But it really happened, which makes the Bible to be unique. All the people in the Bible were real people. All they did were written down, whether good or bad.  We as reader can decide to use these cases as  lessons to be learned. Many destinies have been aborted because of destiny wasters. Many people have died untimely deaths because of destiny killers. These brothers planned to kill Joseph so that his destiny would not be fulfilled. Not even Joseph knew exactly what God wanted to do with him. This is the reason why God keeps many things in secret because He knows that the hearts of men are desperately wicked. Just like God keeps the blueprints of our lives in secret, so also we must keep whatever God revealed to us to ourselves and not make them known to people. Many people have sold their destinies into the hand of wicked people that appeared as friends. Since we do not know what goes on in the heart of people generally, we should ask God for wisdom to know when to speak and when not to speak, and also the depth of information that we should release to anybody. One of the Psalms of David says “Keep watch over my lips LORD” It is better to make things known when it has come to fruition than to release it in the infancy stage.

Because the blessing of Abraham must come to pass, and earlier on before Isaac was born, God revealed to Abraham that his descendants shall spend 400  years in a foreign land and they would maltreat them , but God himself would deliver them and then punish these people for their wickedness and at the end they would come out with a lot of goods. Now we can see the plan of God unfolding by sending Joseph to Egypt. The brothers had no idea that Joseph could ever become anything after selling him to the Ishmaelites. They did not know that what they did that day was part of God’s plan that would eventually bring all of them to the foreign land (Egypt). It was Joseph that God had ordained to go before them to prepare the way for them. Therefore brothers and sisters, God has plan for you. You might not know it now but definitely He is working behind the scenes to make all things come together according to His plan for the world. The world is His and whatever He does is for the world. So what we need to do is to seek His face to know where He wants to use us. Your destiny is His plan for the world. May the LORD find us useful for His glory. The glory of Joseph in Egypt is God’s glory. I pray that more awareness will be given to us to seek God with all our heart, mind and soul so that we can fulfill our destinies in Jesus Name, Amen. God bless you all.
