Genesis 31 now reads ” Now Jacob heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s, and from what was our father’s he has acquired all this wealth.” And Jacob saw the countenance of Laban, and indeed it was not favorable toward him as before.  Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I will be with you.”  So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field, to his flock, and said to them, “I see your father’s countenance, that it is not favorable toward me as before; but the God of my father has been with me. And you know that with all my might I have served your father. Yet your father has deceived me and changed my wages ten times, but God did not allow him to hurt me.   If he said thus: ‘The speckled shall be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore speckled. And if he said thus: ‘The streaked shall be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore streaked.  So God has taken away the livestock of your father and given them to me. “  And it happened, at the time when the flocks conceived, that I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, the rams which leaped upon the flocks were streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted.   Then the Angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, ‘Jacob.’ And I said, ‘Here I am.’   And He said, ‘Lift your eyes now and see, all the rams which leap on the flocks are streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted; for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you.   I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family.’ ”Then Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, “Is there still any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house?   Are we not considered strangers by him? For he has sold us, and also completely consumed our money.  For all these riches which God has taken from our father are really ours and our children’s; now then, whatever God has said to you, do it.”. (Genesis 31:1-16).

When God wants separation between a group of people, the first thing one notices is discontentment. What they were able to endure before would become intolerable. Jacob could see that the countenance of his father-in-law and his brothers-in law were not good any more.  Grumbling and complaining have taken over and the peaceful atmosphere had ceased. God also confirmed to Jacob that it was time to go home. The first step he took was to call Rachel and Leah to the field where they could have heart to heart discussion. He briefed them on all that transpired between him and their father, and also that God also instructed him to return to his country. The wives agreed with him and they set up on this return journey without informing Laban about it.  Unfortunately Rachel who agreed to their moving back to land of Canaan, did not want to part with the idol (images) of his father, so she stole this without Jacob’s knowledge.  Rachel’s behavior revealed the god that she believed in. With all that Jacob must have told her about the God that appeared unto him on his way and now had blessed him with wives, children, menservant and maidservant, why should she steal his father’s image as they were leaving Haran.  Can you now see that God knows each and every one of us more than we know ourselves. It was Rachel that stole Laban’s image and not Leah. What on earth is going on with the beauty pageant that was loved dearly by Jacob and yet the love of God’s Jacob was not in her. She did not only steal this image, when Laban caught up with them, she lied and refused to get her tent searched so that her father would not take it back from her. This made Jacob to pronounce sentence of death upon whosoever that stole Laban’s image.

Children of God, let us continue to make our family members that do not yet have understanding of the gospel  of Jesus Christ to bring them before the LORD for God to touch them. Definitely both Laban and Rachel did not have any understanding about the God of Jacob, even with the blessings that Laban received because of Jacob.  Also Jacob failed to carry along Rachel whom he loved so much in the way of the invisible God that he had come to trust just as his father and grandfather trusted Him. If Rachel had known this God, she would not have carried her father’s gods with her. God just had pity on her by giving her Joseph and later Benjamin before she finally passed away during childbirth. We need to relate the story of God’s love to our children and our spouses that are still struggling with this concept. There is no other way, because Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, and no one can come to the Father except through him. We that have the knowledge are saved purely by grace, so we should endeavor to help others in this regard so that they too can make heaven. May the LORD count us worthy to be His true disciple indeed in Jesus Name. Amen. May the Grace of God be multiplied upon us all , Amen.
