THE BLESSING OF ABRAHAM BEING RELEASED ON JACOB
Isaac was now getting old and was ready to bless his eldest son, Esau. He called him and said unto him ” My son, I am old, I know not the day of my death. Now therefore take, I pray thee thy weapons, thy quiver, and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison. And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat , that my soul may bless thee before I die. And Rebecca heard when Isaac spake to Esau, his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.” Genesis 27:1-5. And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son to go to the flock and bring two good kids of the goats for her to dress it the way their father loved it, so that he can receive the blessing. “And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau, my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. My father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver, and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing. And his mother said unto him, Upon me be thy curse, my son, only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.. And he went and fetched and brought them to his mother, and his mother made a savoury meat, such as his father loved. And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob. And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands and upon the smooth of his neck. And she gave the savoury meat, and the bread, which she had prepared, unto the hand of her son Jacob.”
Jacob presented the venison to his father, who was surprised how quickly it was for him and Jacob told his father that God favored him. Though the father doubted that he was actually Esau but when he asked him to move closer to feel him, he was convinced it was Esau. So he ate it , and gave him wine which he also drank. So he asked him to move closer and kiss him, and when he did, he smelled the smell of the field from the raiment he had on (Esau’s raiment). Then he blessed him thus ” God give thee of the due of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine. Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee, be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee, cursed be every one that curses thee, and blessed be he that blesses thee.” (Genesis 27:28-29).
As soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau came in from his hunting. He also told his father to arise and eat. Isaac said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son thy first born Esau. And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? Where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before you came and have blessed him? And he shall be blessed. When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry , and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.(Genesis 27:30-34)
Jacob with the help of his mother had secured the blessing of Abraham. It had been passed unto him instead of Esau the eldest son. Though it was done in a deceitful way but the hand of God was in it. The prophecy had already gone out that the elder will serve the younger and every pronouncement from Isaac was exactly the blessing God pronounced on Abraham. Looking at the way everything played out, we could see that the blindness of Isaac had a part to play in this situation, because if he was still able to see, he would have preferred to pass on the blessing to Esau rather than Jacob. Also Esau had already gotten married to the Hittites when he was forty years old, and this intercultural marriage had caused grief unto Isaac and Rebekah. (Genesis 26:34-35). The behavior of Esau did not line up with the attitude of the grandfather Abraham, who did not want Isaac to marry any one from the land of Canaan but to go to his country Mesopotamia to get wife for Isaac. Isaac was obedient to his father by waiting for Rebekah to be brought to him as his wife. Jacob did not go along with the way of Esau. Comparing Esau and Jacob, we could deduce that God who knew the end from the beginning knew what Esau was going to do and this would not have brought purity to his lineage. God’s ways are not our ways, and God was in total control of all that Rebekah had to do to ensure that the blessing was passed on to the person God ordained it for. The birthright that Esau sold to Jacob was sealed by the blessing of Isaac. That was what God wanted and everything happened before Esau got back from the field. What a wonderful way to receive God’s favor. Jacob received God’s favor and became the father of 12 tribes of Israel.
My prayer to you today is that you will receive God’s favor in every area of your life. The favor of God will open door that no one can open for you, and will silence every enemy of your soul., and you will continue to enjoy the abundant blessing of God in Jesus name, Amen. It is well with you.
