THE MANIFESTATION OF ABRAHAMIC COVENANT UPON ISAAC
Chapter 26 opened with a report of famine in the land where Isaac dwelt similar to the one that happened during the time of Abraham. We were told that Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, unto Gerar, but we were not told why he went to see the king. The next verse told us that the LORD appeared to him and said, Go not down into Egypt, dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee, for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father. And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries, and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. .And Isaac dwelt in Gerar.” (Genesis 26:1-6).
From these verses we could deduce that Isaac probably went to the king to tell him of his desire to move to Egypt because of the famine in Gerar, But God appeared to him and told him not to go to Egypt. If you could recollect that, there was famine too during the time of Abraham, and they moved to Egypt where his wife was taken from him and the LORD had to intervene by plaguing the house of Pharaoh before Sarah was released and they were sent out from Egypt.(Genesis 12:10-20). God warned Isaac not to do the same thing so as not to have a repeat of Abraham’s situation. In addition to the advice not to go to Egypt, God also reaffirmed his promise of the blessings of Abraham upon him and his descendants. So Isaac obeyed God and stayed in Gerar . When the men of the place asked him who Rebekah was, he lied to them like Abraham did, that she was his sister. This time around they did not take her from him, but eventually Abimelech found out that Rebekah was his wife, and challenged him for not telling the truth. Abimelech charged all people of the land not to touch Isaac and his wife and whoever did will be put to death.(Genesis 26:7-11). Here again we see the covenant of God manifesting upon Isaac and his wife, as we read from the word of God that says “And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people, He suffered no man to do them wrong, yea, he reproved kings for their sake., Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.” (1 Chronicle 16:20-22).
God is a covenant keeping God, He is always faithful while we are so unfaithful. God now performed His work, His wonderful work in the life of Isaac as recorded in verses 12-14 that reads ” Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold, and the LORD blessed him. And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great ; For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds and great store of servants; and the Philistines envied him” Remember there was famine in the land, so while everyone had little or nothing to feed on, Isaac sowed and reaped hundredfold. He had abundance and apparently became the most wealthiest person in the land, and many people might have come to him to ask for food He was very rich in everything, and became very great. The blessing of Abraham was to make his descendants very great and through them the whole world would be blessed. Proverbs 10:22 says, “The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and addeth no sorrow with it” We can see the manifestation of the blessing of Abraham upon Isaac.
