SARAH’S DEATH AND THE SEARCH FOR SPOUSE FOR ISAAC

Chapter 23 opened with Sarah being an hundred and twenty seven years old, died in Hebron, in the land of Canaan and Abraham mourned and wept for her. She was buried in a cave bought from Ephron for 400 shekels of silver. The field and the cave which was located in Machpelah became the burying place for the family of Abraham. Chapter 24 informed us that Abraham was now stricken in age and the LORD had blessed him in all things, therefore the next thing in his mind was to find a spouse for Isaac. Isaac should be very close to 40 years old and needed to get married to his God-ordained spouse. Abraham took it upon himself to search for the bride not among the Canaanites but from his own family in Mesopotamia. He made the servant swear not to take wife for Isaac from the daughters of the Canaanites but to go to his kindred that he left long ago to get wife for Isaac.

After the servant sworn to Abraham, Genesis 24:10-14 reads “And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master , and departed, for all the goods of his master were in his hand, and he arose and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water. And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. Behold I stand here by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water. And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say , Let down thy pitcher I pray thee that I may drink, and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also, let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac, and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master. ”

We have a lot to learn from Abraham and his eldest servant that ruled his house. The house of Abraham was ruled by God -fearing people. They were all faithful to God, to Abraham and to one another The prayer that is necessary for us to pray is for God  to make us a good leader that fears the LORD.  The reason why we have so much chaos in the whole world is because we lack good leadership. Starting from home, to schools, to various organizations, to head of ministries, to governing bodies in different countries, even religious leaders, we lack God-fearing leaders that would lead by examples. If the head is righteous, a higher percentage of the followers will be obedient to the rules and regulations. We could see the fear of God in the life of the eldest servant who took the assignment given to him with all seriousness. He prayed for the leading of the LORD, for guidance and even prayed a specific prayer that will undoubtedly lead to the ONE that had been chosen for Isaac. God answered him exactly as he prayed, and he did not waste time in thanking God that gave him speed and he returned to the land of Canaan with Rebecca whom God had chosen for Isaac.

We could see the effect of prayer while Abraham was sending the servant and when the servant was seeking the LORD’s face concerning the matter. Both of them prayed for God of heaven and earth to send his angels to lead the way,. Abraham also made reference to the God that promised him that the land of Canaan would be given to his descendants, this God will make a way for the servant to get the chosen spouse for Isaac.  It is important that we realize that we can solve so many riddles with our prayers and prayers are never too much, but at times our prayers are not enough. The Bible says, we should pray in season and out of season, and we should pray without ceasing. Unfortunately we grow weary and even faint in course of our praying to God. Our Lord Jesus showed us example of how to pray, he was never too busy to communicate with His Father.. Let us commit every area of our lives to prayer, asking God for his intervention. Do we have some troubles that we cannot reveal to another individual? God knows about it, let us commit it to God in prayer, and we will be surprised how answers will come easily. In Malachi 3:6, God says, “I am the LORD, I change not” .That is to say, the God of Abraham that keeps promises is the God of our generation. He is the one that promised that whatever we ask in His name, the Father would do it”  Let us spend more time in prayer this year, and the God that answers by fire will answer us speedily this year in Jesus Name, Amen. The PEACE of the LORD be with us all. Amen.
