ABRAHAM’S FIRST TEST

The story in this chapter where Abraham was asked to take his son, the long awaited son to the mountain to offer him to God as a burnt offering made me to love Abraham more for his unflinching faith in this God that had called him unto Himself. The Bible says, “And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham, and he said, Behold, here I am. And He said, Take now thy son, thine only son, Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and split the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. Then on the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. ” Genesis 22:1-4.

Abraham had waited for 25 years to have this son, and the other son with his mother had left them. Now the heir to all his blessings had finally come and he had poured all his love upon this boy. His life was wrapped up in this boy and yet when God told him to arise and offer this boy as a burnt offering to him, I could not imagine what would be going through his mind. Could it be that God would change his mind before getting to the mountain after all it took him 3 days to get there (my thought). We have no idea what his thoughts were, but what was certain  was the fact that he did not inform Sarah about this assignment. Neither did he argue with God. This goes to show that he did not given room to any second thought. and did not want any distractions. He was only concerned with what God told him to do. At this point He must have remembered His promises concerning the child, and since the child came from him, it is left for God to make His promises to come to pass on the boy. Abraham”s love for God was more than the love he has for the boy and therefore obeying God’s command was more paramount in his heart. Therefore he did not waste time, and we saw that he set about on this journey early in the morning and traveled for 3 days to get there. It was really a test of faith, and he passed this test in flying colors. When they got to the  place, he told the young men that went with them , “Abide ye here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder, and worship, and come again to you.”  This was a statement of faith, which was affirming that both of us will return to you, despite the fact that he knew what the Lord had told him to do. When Isaac asked his father , “Behold the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” , he replied  “God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering.” Exactly what he said came to pass. God spoke from heaven and told him not to touch the lad, and that there was a lamb that was caught in the thicket waiting to be sacrificed.

It is good to love the Lord the way Abraham did, Loving God enables us to abide by His statutes and ordinances. He says in John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”  That is why we could say that Abraham loved the LORD and he was able to carry out his commandment.  He also feared God and also trusted Him. What Abraham did provoked more blessings upon his life. Genesis 22:15-18 reads “And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld  thy son , thine only son, That in blessing, I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore, and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies.  And in thy seed, shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed my voice.” Because Abraham obeyed God’s voice, God was very happy with him.

If we all had obeyed the LORD and not flout His authority many times , we would have really enjoyed His blessings. We need to ask for the mercies of God to start anew with us because we have all fallen short of the glory of God. Personally I could say that I did not have as much understanding of the scriptures as I now have as I am walking through Genesis with Abraham. Many things that I lost was because I did not walk with the LORD in obedience. Before, I did not make reading of my Bible a priority. I had made so many mistakes because I did not know how to follow God. Though I had passion for things of God, I was not devoted to spending time with the LORD as I do now. My life has changed since I started to bury myself in the word of God. I am sharing this with you so you too can borrow from my own experience and start to do likewise. When you spend time in the word of God and you really pray for the Holy Spirit to give you understanding, He will open you up to things you do not know. Jeremiah 33:3 says :Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” There are blessings attached to seeking God. Let us make year 2019 a year of seeking the LORD , and obeying Him, and as we seek Him we shall find Him in Jesus name, Amen. God bless you all.
