SEPARATION OF ISHMAEL FROM ISAAC
The call of Abraham involved separation from the country, kindred and even from Lot that went with him So it is not surprising that Sarah called for separation of Ishmael from Isaac and the LORD backed her up. Even though Abraham was not happy with the decision, the LORD told him to hearken to the advise of Sarah. Also because the child of promise had arrived, Ishmael that had been enjoying the blessing of being the only child for long was now filled with jealousy. He could see that Abraham’s attention had been diverted to Isaac, the true heir to the blessing of Abraham. We know of what jealousy could bring, as it happened between Cain and Abel, so caution had to be exercised between Ishmael and Isaac, and that was why Sarah demanded separation. The scripture reads ” And the child grew, and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned. And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this woman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son. And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice, for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.”(Genesis 21: 8-13).
Why is separation always necessary before the fulfillment of God’s promise? The reason is because God knows how frail the human flesh is. For the works of flesh could set in, seeing the blessings of God on that individual. It could lead to jealousy, envy, hatred and all kinds of evil which could hinder the flow of the blessings to other people. Secondly, separation always makes the individual to be focused on the Blesser more. The Lord knows that the only way to release His abundant blessings on the individual is to take the individual into the vicinity where enlargement could take place. Therefore Ishmael and Isaac could not dwell together and the time to separate them was now when they were still young. Also each child also carries the blessing of multiplication because they were Abraham’s sons, but the actual blessings that was pronounced on the children of Abraham was only on Isaac (for in Isaac shall thy seed be called).
We can see the fulfillment of God’s promise in Isaac which became a nation of promise (Israel) while the Arabs today represents the descendants of Ishmael. The Arabs though they are very rich, but they are predominantly Muslims and they are very religious and believe in war so as to have dominion over other nations. The spread of their religion was very rapid because of the mechanism they used, which was either they dominate or kill. Looking at the world today, we could see all that have been happening even before we were born on the pages of the Bible. This makes the God of Abraham the ONLY TRUE GOD. It is in the reading of the Bible that more understanding will be given to us about God and his plan for humanity. Since He is the Principal Actor in shaping our destiny, we should learn to go along His bidding. He is the ONE who knows what He wants to do and how He wants to do it, so we should allow Him to navigate the path for us. So we are just vessels being used by Him. He is the Porter and we are the clay.
Brothers and sisters, this is the year to seek God more, to focus on Jesus and continue to listen to Him so as not to miss His time of visitation. The LORD will reveal Himself to us more and more this year in Jesus Name. God be with you all. .
