LOT’S LUKEWARMNESS

In Chapter 19, we saw the effort the angels made in rescuing Lot’s family from Sodom before they destroyed it with fire.. The Bible says in verse 12 “And the men (angels) said unto Lot, “Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters , and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place. For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxing great before the face of the LORD, and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.  And Lot went out, and spake unto his son’s in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place for the LORD will destroy this city.. But he seemed as one mocked unto his son’s in law.”

These verses explained the spiritual state of Lot. The angels advised him to bring all his loved ones including his sons in law out of Sodom but he could not because they did not take him seriously. How can one joke about the destruction of the city without meaning it? Though Lot did not embrace the lifestyle of Sodom, he condoned it or tolerated it. People around him could not single him out as a family that believed in righteousness otherwise the sons in law would have believed him when he came to them with that information. If you are living among your family and they cannot identify where you belong, there is a problem. Your actions or behavior, your speech or communication, and even your dressing should reflect who you are. It all boils down to integrity.   If you are a child of God, say it to anyone who cares to know, act like it, and practice it so that people can see Christ in you. The behavior of Lot could be termed “Lukewarm behavior,” and God does not approve of such behavior.

Therefore it was not surprising that he could not carry his loved ones out of Sodom, because no one could follow his leading. Even though his wife and two daughters went with him, his wife’s covetousness led her to look back. What was she looking back for? Was it the material things she left behind that were about to be destroyed? Two times Lot changed his mind as to where to stay for fear of being killed. Eventually where he stayed ( Cave) were too lonely for the daughters and they thought there was no man on the earth to marry them so they committed incest with their father so as to preserve the seed of their father.  The older one got pregnant and had a boy which she named Moab, which is the Father of the Moabites unto this day. The younger one got pregnant and had a son which she called Benammi  which is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

If we compare the spiritual temperature of Abraham and Lot,  we would see that what the LORD said concerning Abraham was very true because He said he would guide and teach his children in the way of the LORD. This was not the case with Lot. Both Lot and his children were not in tune with the way of the LORD . Lot did not learn from his uncle what the servants of Abraham learned from him and that is seeking God’s will. Abraham was still very close to them, they could have sought the help of their father’s uncle instead of making their father drunk so that he could have sex with them so as to preserve his posterity. The path they followed is not path of righteousness and these group of people became enemies of the children of Israel and later destroyed. Let us see what the scripture says concerning lukewarmness. Revelation 3:15-16 says “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot, I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth.”  Therefore Lot did not follow the path of righteousness like his uncle (Abraham), and we could see the result of this. So let us be identified with Christ and  be totally committed to Him. It is well with us all, Amen.
