THE DESTRUCTION OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH
Chapter 18 revealed to us that the angelic visitation brought good news and bad news. We treated the good news yesterday which was the promise of a son to Abraham through Sarah. The bad news concern the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The Bible says “Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way. And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” And the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.” (Genesis 18:16-21)
The continuation of this chapter highlighted the intercession of Abraham concerning Sodom, and it reads “Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (Genesis 18:22-25).
Well the LORD promised to spare the cities if there were found 50, 40, 30, 20 or even 10 people that were righteous. At this point, Abraham gave up and apparently hoping that the LORD would find 10 righteous people so that the cities would be spared. Unfortunately, the LORD could not find 10 righteous people but Lot, and his wife and two daughters were spared by the angels from being destroyed along with them. They too were hesitant in leaving the place but the angels had to drag them out and asked to escape to another city and were given instruction not to look back. Genesis 19:23-26 reads “The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar. Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens. So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
The destruction of these two cities brought to mind the promise of God not to wipe out the whole world with flood any more. But there are some judgment that are being applied locally instead of globally. These cities were noted for same sex affair, men with men and women with women. As a matter of fact the night the angels arrived at Sodom, Lot was fortunate to meet them and he persuaded them to come to his house because he knew the men of the city would want to harass them. Even in his house, the men of the city came banging on the door to release the men to them because news had gone round that there were two visitors in the city. The situation was really bad that they almost forced the door open but the intervention of the angels stopped them because they made all of them blind. Their case had degenerated to the lowest ebb, and the LORD had no other choice but to destroy the two cities with brimstone and fire.
What can we learn from this episode? We are going through a step by step of how to walk with God without incurring his anger / fury or judgment. Though He is a Merciful God so also we can see that sinners will not go unpunished. With the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, should any body think that same sex marriage is an option, that they were fashioned that way. If this lifestyle was an abomination to Him at that time, why would He create anybody to live as such at this age? Same sex marriage is from the pit of hell and cannot receive the blessing of fruitfulness which the LORD pronounced on Adam and Eve in Genesis 1:28. Christians who know that this is not right should go to God to ask for help, and pray to God for deliverance from this bondage. Just like any kind of sin demands the judgment of God, we all need to ask for mercy of God in every area of our lives where we are found wanting. We were told that even Lot’s wife did not make it because of sin of disobedience. They were told not to look back but she did and the judgment upon her was immediate, because she became a pillar of salt.
Children of God, let us fear God and obey His commandments. Let us learn from Abraham the way he was able to experience the mercy of God rather than His anger. God told us in the verses above that ” I know Abraham, and that he would teach his children to do righteousness and justice.” Can God say the same thing about you and me? God is waiting for True Christians, who are faithful to the core, and would live a righteous life and teach their children and others to do the same. Are you one of those Christians that God can vouch for? If not let us turn a new leaf this year, and walk with God blamelessly. Let us make our garment to be “WHITE” so that we can receive commendation from the LORD. Jesus is coming back soon, are you ready?
May the LORD be with us all. Amen.
