SARAI TRIED TO HELP GOD
After the covenant in chapter 15, we were informed in Chapter 16 of the attempt made by Sarai to help God achieve his plan for Abram. Genesis 16:1-6 reads, “Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing , I pray thee, go in unto my maid, it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. And he went in unto Hagar and she conceived and when she saw that she had conceived , her mistress was despised in her eyes. And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee, I have given my maid into thy bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived , I was despised in her eyes, the LORD judge me and thee. But Abram said unto Sarai , Behold, thy maid is in thy hand, do to her as it pleases thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her she fled from her face.”
For ten years Abram and Sarai had been living with Hagar whom they brought from Egypt and there was no problem between Sarai and Hagar because they were in perfect will of God. Hagar respected her mistress and did all she had to do as an handmaid for many years until this fateful day that Sarai gave up trusting God and believed that what she wanted could be obtained from Hagar. This episode is closely related to what happened in the garden of Eden when Satan tempted Eve and Eve ate the forbidden fruit and gave to her husband to eat too. After a covenant was made by God assuring him that what He had promised Abram would surely come tom pass, then Sarai ‘s hope was lost. Even if Satan was not mentioned in this chapter, I strongly believed that the temptation again came from him to make her believe that God was not going to follow through with His covenant. Unfortunately it is always the weaker vessel that Satan attacks easily. It never crossed Abram once to think of doing it this way. But coming from Sarai was difficult for him to refuse, and he fell into the trap set by the devil. Personally I blame Sarai going the route of helping herself to get an issue. I also lay a lot of blame on Abram that agreed to the idea of getting an issue through Hagar when the LORD had already assured him with a covenant . Why do men fall easily through their women? Adam fell because of Eve’s covetousness, and Abram committed this offense because of Sarai’s persuasion? Does it mean men are not strong enough to put their wives in check? Men need to learn from these lessons, and arise to put in check some of the excesses of women. They are supposed to be their spiritual leaders. Whenever the women are going away from the plan of God, they need to stand in their rightful place and say NO! They need to ask for God’s wisdom to teach them on how to deal with their loving wives and still not fall.
Hagar had now come between Abram and Sarai. The house that was peaceful before had now turned to a battle field. Hagar was pregnant and the mistress was nobody to her anymore. She was her rival because she was also a wife to Abram. What the mistress had been looking for, had been given to her, or so she thought. She became the boss and was not ready to do any house work any longer. Sarai was despised in her eyes. Look at the consequences of not taking God at His word. Did God know about all this? Of course!!!. This is what it means to trust God no matter what. When the Scripture says “Do not lean on your own understanding, but acknowledge Him and he will direct your path” (Proverbs 3:5-6), it is an advice from God through Solomon. Can you imagine the tension that existed between Abram, Sarai, Hagar, and the child for 14 years before the promise of God became a reality? Just like the consequences of the sin of Adam and Eve spread to us today, so also we will see later the unending battle between the child of Hagar and that of Sarai.
If we want to have PEACE, let us wait on the LORD. Let God prove Himself in our lives as God instead of doing it our way. It does not matter how long his promise takes, let’s wait for it. He knows better than we do and He knows the end from the beginning. The LORD will give us the grace to wait on Him until He fulfills His promises in our lives in Jesus name, Amen.
