BLESSINGS THAT COME FROM THE LORD

Today we would look at another blessing that God in his infinite mercies showered on another widow in the Bible. 1 Kings 17: 8 -16 reads, “And the word of the LORD came unto him (Elijah),saying, Arise, get thee to Zarephath which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there, behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. So he arose and went to Zarephath, And when he came to the gate of the city, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks, and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink . And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand. And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse and behold I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it and die. And Elijah said unto her, Fear not, go and do as thou hast said, but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth. And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah and she, and he, and her house did eat many days. And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.”

God of Israel is the God of the universe. Every one of us are his tool or vessel which  can be used to achieve his purpose. In this story we saw a powerful man of God that God used to prophesy to king Ahab who was on the throne at that time, that because of the sins of the nation there would not be dew nor rain for many years. Immediately after this prophecy the Lord commanded Elijah to go and hide himself by the brook and also commanded the ravens to feed him there while he drank from the brook. So the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning and in the evening. This continued for many days until the brook dried up. Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah that he had prepared another source to sustain him and this time it was a Gentile widow who had a son. This widow, though not a Jew, must have had an intimate relationship with the God of Israel. This woman feared the Lord and obeyed his commandments. She was also familiar with the prophets of Israel, so Prophet Elijah’s coming to her to make a request, was apparently not something new in Israel. But her faithfulness paid off when she responded to the need of this prophet. This woman experienced a miracle from the little she had. God of Israel multiplied it to the point everyone in the house lacked no food throughout the remaining years of the drought that was pronounced by prophet Elijah.

God used the need of Elijah to bless this widow. If she did not believe in the God of Israel nor his prophet, she would not have experienced this miracle that made God to single her out for an unusual blessing. The LORD did not use any widow or any other woman in Israel but the widow of Zarephath. The story shines more light upon the fact that God knows what every one is going through. God knows who you are and where you are. There are some women in Israel who could not do what this woman did. She must have been a believer, faithfully worshiping God of Israel, and now God entrusted her with his servant to take care.  Are you a believer? Do you believe that Jesus can meet you at the point of your needs, and even make you a source of blessing to other people? The Bible says in Luke 1:45, “And blessed is she that believed for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.” Do you desire blessing from the Lord that will surpass your current earnings that could be extended to other people? The Lord directs, commands, and brings to pass whatever he desires to do. He can make you a candidate of surplus blessing but such blessing comes with sacrifice, not thinking of your own need alone but the need of others first. The Lord knows your heart and what you will do with your surplus when given. As you are moving into the last month of the year, and also preparing to move into year 2019, you need to move closer to God, be determined to improve your relationship with him, be concerned with bringing souls to Christ, and be kingdom-focused. Matthew 6:33 says, Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things (blessings) shall be added unto you. God bless you as you spend more time on his word to build your faith so that you can receive your blessings in Jesus Name, Amen.
