Zechariah 3:1-3…And he showed me, Joshua, the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee O Satan, even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee, is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.
When I considered what our Lord Jesus came to do on the planet earth, it makes me to appreciate our God for the unconditional love He has for mankind. From the beginning, we were the one that went against His commandments and this brought evil upon us. Since then our hearts have been darkened and human beings had done every unimaginable thing on the surface of the earth that had made God to be sorry for creating us. The Serpent (Satan) that went into the garden to cause the fall of mankind was referred to in Revelation as a great red dragon. Revelation 12 :3-10 reads, “…behold a great red dragon having seven heads, and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his head, whose tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and did cast them to the earth, and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And she brought forth a man child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron, and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. The dragon and his angels fought Michael and his angels, and they did not prevail, and the great dragon, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceives the whole world, he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ, for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.”
This account in Revelation concerning Satan is necessary for us to know who we are dealing with. We are not supposed to be afraid of him but to be aware of what he does day and night and that is to accuse us before God. He would be the one to tempt us to lead us to sin (when we fall into his deceit or trick), and he is the one to accuse us before God of doing wrong. The bible says he deceives the whole world. He had led millions of people to sin and to carry out every form of wickedness, and at the end he throws party to rejoice over his captives, leading them to where he (devil) will spend his eternity, and that is Hell Fire, because he knows that God is God of Justice who will not go against his laws. Remember how he deceived Eve and Adam to eating the forbidden fruit, and at the end, he was happy when the couple was sent out of the beautiful garden and had to fend for themselves through hard work. The same way he would lead people to commit murder and after that, the person will end in jail or sentenced to death or the person will commit suicide. All the various atrocities that people commit would have been done before they realized the consequences of their actions, and after that time, it would be too late.
Is there a way out of the satanic activities in our midst? Yes there is a way out. That is why I am very grateful for the sacrificial work of our Lord Jesus on the Cross, Revelation 12:11 reads, And they (our brethren) overcame him (the old serpent, Devil, Satan) by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony..” Do you not see that no human being has power to overcome Satan except through the finished work on the cross of Calvary. Satan has the authority to stand before God to accuse every one that sinned. Imagine his presence among the sons of God when they appeared before Him in the book of Job 1:6. So also in the text of today, Zechariah 3:1 says “Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him (wanting to wrestle with him to prevent him from receiving his blessing). What makes him to be able to stand at the right hand (hand of power) of Joshua? because he is the accuser of brethren, he had succeeded in causing Joshua the high priest to commit sin. The dirty garment on Joshua was a symbol of his spiritual state. But thank God that the LORD took perfect control of the situation and rebuked Satan and reminded him that this one has been plucked from fire and is a fire brand. Verse 4 says “And he (the LORD) answered and spake unto those that stood before him saying ” Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. …and also put a turban (fair mitre) upon thy head.”
This filthy state was our spiritual state before we came to Jesus. When we confess with our mouth that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, our filthy garment was removed by washing us with His blood, and were now clothed in new garment which is the righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ..We are now new creatures, old things (life) are passed away and behold all things become new. Now knowing what brought us to this point, we should not allow the deceitfulness of Satan to bring us to this filthy state anymore. If we give in to him again, he will prevent us from enjoying the blessing of God as we should. The same warning or advice was given to Joshua the high priest in verse 7 which reads thus, “If thou will walk in my ways, and if thou will keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shall also keep my court and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.” We also need to walk in his ways for the rest of our lives, and do not listen to the devil again because we overcame him already by the blood of the Lamb (Jesus). Continuous asking for the Holy Spirit and his power will prevent us from falling into the trap of the devil. If you have not given your life to Christ, your sins are hanging on your head waiting for judgment, but if you surrender your life to Christ, all those sins would be washed away and you would be able to overcome Satan by the blood of Jesus, and the gift of eternal life with Jesus would be waiting for you.
Please give your life to Jesus today, tomorrow might be too late. God bless you as join the household of faith today.
