I Corinthians 4:20…For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power.

When Jesus began his earthly ministry, one of His phrases was that “the kingdom of God is here”. Following His statement would be the demonstration of the power of God through teaching and performing dumbfounding miracles. Many miracles that are performed were most of the time either in the synagogues or on Sabbath days when the rulers (high priests, Sadducees, and Pharisees) of the Synagogues would show their anger or disapproval because the law of Moses prevents work done on Sabbath days (it should be kept holy). All the good work he performed were a demonstration of what the kingdom of God is like. Instead of these rulers to search the scriptures and study the law of Moses very well in order to understand who Jesus was, they began to count against him that if he were from God as professed, why was He performing miracles on Sabbath days. In essence what they focused on was “work” . They were totally ignorant of the work Jesus came to do which was showing compassion on the sick, the blind, the lame and all those that were possessed of the devil, They did not know that He came to heal and to set the captives free and also to save them from their sins. . Let us go into the scriptures and check some of the miracles performed by Jesus.

Matthew 12:9-14 reads “Now when He had departed from there, He went into their synagogue. And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand. And they asked Him, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” that they may accuse Him. Then He said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other.. Then the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him. John 5: 1-18 reported a situation again on a Sabbath day that Jesus healed a man who had infirmity for 38 years in Jerusalem, by the pool at Bethesda. The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the Sabbath day, it is not lawful for you to carry your bed. Imagine the wickedness of the Jews concerning the miracles that Jesus performed on their “so called Sabbath day” on a man who had remained in one position for 38 years. Should not such a person be pitied on a Holy day? There was another man who was born blind, and Jesus healed him on a Sabbath day, He made a clay and put it in His eyes, and asked him to go and wash in the pool of Siloam. He went his way and washed and came back seeing. Some of the Pharisees said “this man is not of God, because he keepeth not the Sabbath day. When the Pharisees questioned the man that was cured, he said among other things, “Herein is a marvelous thing that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. Now we know that God heareth not sinners, but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth . Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.” (John 9:30-34). They answered and said unto him, “Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

I gave these examples to show the statement made by Paul in I Corinthians 4:20 that the kingdom of God is not in words but in power. Unfortunately the rulers of Jesus’ day did not understand that the miracles that He performed was to show them the power of God and that He was sent by God. Those that believed when they saw these miracles knew that Jesus was not  an ordinary man. The prophets that came before him did not do all that He did, Even Moses that they believed in did not perform miracles like Jesus did. He was led by God to declare the ten plagues that happened in Egypt and was asked to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. he had his own specific assignment, but Jesus’ ministry superseded that of Moses. Moses wrote in Deuteronomy that another deliverer like him would be raised and they should hear him. No prophet could be compared to Jesus and then He told them that even if they did not believe him, they should believe the works that he did because they were from the Father that sent Him.. Fortunately, His disciples continued the work using His Name. Therefore Jesus brought the kingdom of heaven down to earth when He came in the flesh. Even in the present generation, miracles are still witnessed in the name of Jesus.

Therefore brethren, the kingdom of God is already among us. God the Father abiding in God the Son, and God sending His Spirit into all believers as the Holy Spirit. We are in the dispensation of the Holy Spirit, and the work continues through Him. Throughout the period of the apostles, they were always filled with the Holy Spirit and then miracles were witnessed through them. Any believer can demonstrate the power of God if that believer is filled with the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit of God that makes things happen. We should allow Holy Spirit to rekindle His fire in us, believers, so that more souls could be saved and those in bondage could be set free. Where the Spirit of God is, there is always manifestation of the power of God. Let us invite the Spirit of God into our lives, our families, our jobs, our schools, our cities, our nations so that peace of God that passes man’s understanding can envelop us and reign supreme in all the world, in Jesus Name, Amen.

Prayer…Lord come and take control and fill us up so that we can experience peace and joy again in Jesus name, Amen.
