Psalm 27:1..The LORD is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life of whom shall I be afraid?
This psalm like many others is the psalm of David. David whom the LORD chose to be the king of Israel after the LORD took it from king Saul experienced the LOVE of God first hand as he was hand picked out of eight sons of Jesse. He was the youngest of the sons of Jesse, and also was the one in charge of the flock of their father. The LORD sent Samuel to the house of Jesse to anoint one of the sons of Jesse as the next king of Israel. Jesse prepared his sons to meet Samuel but he did not consider David as anyone important to be placed into that position, so he allowed him to take the sheep and the cattle for grazing. When all the sons have passed before Samuel and the LORD did not choose any one of them, Samuel then asked if there was any other child of his anywhere, Then he remembered David and Samuel sent for him and even said, nobody would sit down until his arrival. As soon as he got to the scene, the Lord announced him as the king and Samuel anointed him immediately
David was highly favored to be chosen out of all the sons of Jesse. None of the brothers or his father could have thought that David could ever be king, but the LORD that created him knew he had plan for him. He taught him how to defend the sheep by fighting the lion and the bear who wanted to kill them. Being a young boy, he could have been afraid of those ferocious animals while alone in the field watching the flock. According to his words in another psalm, he says ” It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bowl of steel is broken by mine arms.Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation, and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.” (Psalm 18:32, 34, 35). David had developed so much confidence in God with all that He had done in his life that he does not fear any one but God. When you fear God, you will obey His commandments. David says “I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me. I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity. Therefore had the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in this eyesight.” (Psalm 18:21-24).
So for David to say the LORD is my Light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? David had walked with the LORD to the point of “NO RETURN” because there is no one like our God. If lion and bear could not harm him who else could? The LORD has been helping him to overcome all his enemies because God is his strength. God helped him to kill Goliath whom all the hosts of Israeli Army, were afraid of. He killed him with his sling. King Saul became his enemy out of envy, and he tried on many occasions to kill him but did not succeed. You will agree with me that when you put all your hope in God, you will never be disappointed. David confidently said “Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear, though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life.to behold the beauty of the LORD and to enquire at his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion, in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me, he shall set me up upon a rock.” (18:3-5).
We too can develop the same confidence in God if we walk with him. We will know that “No weapon formed against us shall ever prosper” (Isaiah 54:17) and that the weapons of our warfare to fight are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds. (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). Let us fear God and walk uprightly before Him, obey His commandments, and His statutes. Love what He loves and hate what He hates. Run away from sin. Submit to Him and the enemies will flee from you and you will become a terror to your enemies. I say with David that “The LORD is my Light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? No one. The LORD is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?” No one. This shall be your portion and mine in Jesus Name Amen.
Prayer.. LORD, make me to continue to dwell under the shadow of your wings in Jesus Name, Amen.
