Matthew 11:28-30.. Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

There is so much burden in every individual and in every home. The reason for this burden was the foundation of many families which were based on the ignorance of our ancestors and also on their knowledge of God  Many of our ancestors were worshipers of Idols , The idols in my country have different names such as :”ogun, oya, osun, sango  and so many others” and the powers they got from these gods were actually from devil himself. They were empowered to kill themselves in show of power, and also they used human beings as sacrifices to these gods  The Bible condemned this idol worshiping and in order to make Himself known he started to build a family through whom he could reveal himself to the whole world. Abraham was the father of this family which later became the family of Israel. He gave this family commandments to follow to keep them focused on Him, the Creator. Exodus 20:1-5 says, “And God spake all these words saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee, any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them, for I the LORD  thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.” From these commandments of God, we can understand that our ancestors had committed a lot of abominations and many of their children’s children are in bondage because of the gods their forefathers had served. Though we can call this period “a period of ignorance”, but God is a God of justice, and the correct penalty had to be administered according to his law or principle.

Apart from serving other gods, yoke or burden could be laid upon man by curse from parents. For example Jabez inherited curse from his mother, the mother named him so because she gave birth to him in sorrow. So also Jacob was blessed by his father but his twin brother was made slaves to him, therefore Esau received a yoke as a result of being made a slave to his brother. Genesis 27:40 “And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shall serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.”

All that I have analyzed in the paragraph above is for us to know that yoke or burden comes in different forms. Many of us do not know the kind of yoke we are carrying or the burden we are bearing. In the book of Isaiah (10:27) we are told that the yoke is broken by the reason of anointing. Matthew 11:28 also tells us that Jesus invited us to come to him, all of us who labor and have nothing to show for it or those who bear heavy burden and run from pillar to post and yet can not make ends meet. Jesus recognizes that the only way to set us free from these “yoke or burden” is to come to Him and lay them down upon him. He is the only One that can set us free. That was the purpose of his coming…to destroy the works of the devil, (1 John 3:8b), to set the captives free and to open the prison doors (Isaiah 61:1), and to forgive us of all our sins and heal us of all our diseases.

The invitation from Jesus is more than setting us free from all those burdens, He also wants us to be like Him. He says when we come closer to Him we will be able to learn from his meekness (humility) which made him to overcome all the problems of the world. He submitted to the will of the father and allowed His plan to be fulfilled through him. When we yield completely to Him, He will teach us to take up His own will (which is the father’s will) so that the purpose of God could be fulfilled in our lives. John 10:10 told us the mission of Satan was to kill, to steal and to destroy. Ill-health (sickness), loss of loved ones, loss of property, loss of jobs, and so many other discomfort could cause a lot of burden to many people. Whatever the burden that you are concerned about today, our Lord Jesus is inviting us to bring all these problems to Him so as to have the rest he desired for us. He wants us to be burden-free because He is a burden bearer. Isaiah 53:4-5 says  “Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows…But He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes, we are healed.” The scripture is telling us that he gave his life for this purpose so that you and I do not go through all these heartache. We are living in an imperfect world, things of this nature are bound to happen perhaps because of our foundation that was not laid on Jesus Christ from the beginning, or as a result of what we ourselves have done or other people have done. He is God, He knows the end from the beginning,, He knows that all these things will happen to the world, that is why He made that sacrifice on the cross to end it all. So getting free from all these burden depends on you coming to Him and allowing Him to take them over, and then you will enjoy the rest that is meant for you. John 10:10 b says”I have come so that you might have life and have it more abundantly.”

I plead with you today as the year is running to an end, let us come to Jesus, release all our burden unto him, then learn from him (by following his examples), humble ourselves by submitting to God, do his will, and we shall enjoy his rest here on earth and also in heaven in Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer…Lord, I rededicate my life to you, help me to lay my own burden down and carry your own in Jesus name, Amen.
