Luke 16:13…No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other, or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Our Lord Jesus Christ made this assertion in many different ways in all the gospels because it is the cause of the problem that faces humanity.  The level the humanity had sunk into because of wanting to have everything the world has to offer is beyond human reasoning. What amazes me at times is that we all recognize that we will leave this world one day and all that we have acquired will be left behind. Then why do we engage in a rat race to have as much money as possible while on this earth. Many people have made human sacrifices in order to have money that will only last for a season. Even after being told the consequences of their actions, they still don’t care because they just want to enjoy it while it lasts. They care less about the end time. This is what Satan the deceiver had sold to the world, since he messed Adam and Eve up in the garden of Eden. People’s eyes have been glued to the beauties and the glamour of the world, and unfortunately people are not learning from the mistakes of those before us. Solomon in his writing talks about the futility of human life. He wrote about the extent of living a luxurious life where he carried out everything possible under the sun for his own curiosity and enjoyment, but at the end he found out that all was vanity upon vanity.

Ecclesiastes 2 :4-11 reads “I made me great works, I builded me houses, I planted me vineyards, I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruits, I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees. I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house, also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me. I gathered me also silver and gold. and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces; I gat me men singers, and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts. So I was great, and increased more than  all that were before me in Jerusalem, also my wisdom remained with me, And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them. I withheld not my heart from any joy, for my heart rejoiced in all my labor, and this was my portion of all my labor. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do, and behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun”.

This was from the richest and wealthiest king ever lived. Why did he stray away from God? Because his mind was only after pleasure, and everything his mind desired with the money God gave to him. Where is God in this equation? He occupied himself with things of the flesh and God and money can not take the same place.  At the time of his fleshy desires, the only focus was money and what it could do under the sun. Whenever one gives place to the flesh to do whatever it pleases, one has opened door for the devil to continue to give one more desires until eventually collapses under the weight of sin. One cannot satisfy flesh and God at the same time. Romans 8: 5-8 says “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh, but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is DEATH, but to be spiritually minded is LIFE and PEACE. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”

That is the reason why our Lord Jesus says  we cannot serve two masters, we cannot serve God and mammon. All that Solomon did made God to be angry with him and the nation of Israel was split into two, two were left for his lineage (because of David, his father who was righteous) and ten tribes were given to Jeroboam. Money was supposed to serve us , not we serving money. Abraham was blessed, but he did not allow his blessing to stand between him and God. David was blessed but his heart was right before God all the days of his life. The love of money is the root of all evils. Whenever you seek material things at the expense of your spiritual life, you have deviated from godly wisdom. Whenever you can do anything to get money, enslaving people to get rich, using dishonest methods to acquire wealth, greediness, covetousness and the like, you are already a slave to money and to Satan. The society we are in now do not have the fear of God in them, it is very hard to find a person of integrity that will not fall for money. They do not ask themselves the question “what does it profit a man to gain the whole world (build houses, have chain of cars, or jets, have a lot of girl friends or man friend) and looses his or her soul?. Solomon at the end of his fleshy accomplishment says, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing , whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)  .When you love God and do his will, you will enjoy life to the fullest and have peace of God which passes man’s understanding, and God would make money available to you because you are his servant. Use your money to please God. Instead of squandering it to please yourself, use your money to take care of the less privileged ones, the poor, the needy, the homeless (meet them at the point of their needs) and do more for God so that you will be rich concerning things of God. Let money serve you, and not you serving money.  We are living in a temporary world, and the world as we know it will expire one day together with all that are in it. Let our priority be placed on God and let us serve Him with all our heart and soul and mind. You will be blessed as you do so in Jesus Name, Amen.

Prayer..Lord, give me more grace to be sensitive to heavenly things than to earthly things that will not last.
