Luke 10:41-42..And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.
Mary and Martha loved the Lord and they were sisters. They had a brother named Lazarus. This family were loved by the Lord and he regularly visited them. Any time Jesus entered their village, this family welcomed Jesus and his entourage into their home. They loved hearing the word of God that was always being preached by the Lord. This particular day, Jesus entered their home and many people sat around Jesus to hear his preaching. Mary was also among those that sat at Jesus’ feet . But Martha was the caring type that would want to serve every one that came into the house with Jesus. That is of course a good hospitality, taking care of people that are visiting should be a good attitude to cultivate. Unfortunately, this day the crowd must have been overwhelming for this family and Martha was the only one that seemed to be so worried that her mind was distracted from the teaching, and all her focus was how to get food to every one in attendance. If only she could get her sister to help her. She must have used so many gestures to get her sister to come to her aid, but Mary was wrapped up with the teachings of Jesus that she did not respond to any of the gestures.
She was so disturbed and wondered what kind of a sister she had. Was she not bothered with the crowd and she knew that the visitation would soon be over and what kind of name were they going to be given if the visitors were not well attended to. All these thoughts and many more must have been going through her mind and when she could not hold it any longer, she came to Jesus to find out if what her sister was doing was right. The scripture reads, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” (verse 40). From her question to Jesus, she was not only blaming Mary, but she had extended the blame to Jesus for allowing Mary to sit at his feet to hear the message instead of coming to help her to serve. The reply that Jesus gave to her must have left her wondering why she was cumbered with a load of care? Jesus made it clear in his reply that there is time for everything, and some things are more important than the other. The Word of God should be of prime importance to every creature. One Word (from God) spoken into one’s life can change life around for good. Our Lord Jesus told Martha that Mary had chosen the most important thing that is needed in life (the good part), and no one will be able to take it away from her. If you asked Martha, what did she gain from the Lord that day, she would say, “Nothing”. There was no way she could have gained anything when her mind was crowded with so much thoughts about things that do not lift her spirit up.
Martha represents majority of mankind, and to drive the point home, I was Martha before, and I thank God that He had changed me to Mary. The ministry where I served for many years, was a school for me where I learnt that it is better to be Mary than to be Martha. It is not that hospitality is not a good part of the ministry, but it should not take you away from the Word. Many Conventions were done where many powerful preachers of the Word were invited, but because I was so involved in the ministry of hospitality, I would be in the kitchen preparing food and also be very much into serving so that every one could have something to eat before departure. Though they would go home satisfied, and then commended me for a job well done, but I was lacking and deficient in the things that I was supposed to have knowledge about if I had also attended the services with all my mind. Even when I sat for a few minutes to hear the Word, my mind would not be there wholeheartedly because I would be thinking of all the people I gave work to do and be worried if they did what they were supposed to do. I did not want any disappointment and I wanted things to be perfect. On one occasion I was so worn out physically that I could not attend the grand finale of the Convention. What a shame!!!
Let us think of all the effort we put in into things that would perish, the food would digest and be forgotten, and many would not even remember what type of food that was served, because it was only for the moment. What they would remember if they listened attentively with no distractions would be the Word of God that was preached that touched their lives. It is the Word of God that changes lives. The Bible says in Matthew 4:4 “But Jesus answered and said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”. So also Ephesians referred to the Word of God as the Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17). Hebrew 4:12 says “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
Since I learnt my lessons in a big way, I do not allow things of the world, “what to eat, what to drink or what to wear” to take the place of the Word of God for my life. I will rather commit all those things to God and ask for His empowerment to see me through the caring part. After all he took care of thousands of people (the multitude) that came to listen to him with five loaves of bread and two fishes, and on another occasion he took care of them with seven loaves of bread and small fishes. The Word of God is the only part of life that can make us successful here (Joshua 1:8) on earth and also take us to heaven when our time comes. The more you hear, the more the ability to abide by the Word, and the more transformation you will experience. You will be empowered to run from sin, and material things will not matter to you anymore, and you will enjoy the abundant life that God has for you. Let us choose this good part that NO ONE can take from us. Be like Mary and the LORD will uphold you to the end in Jesus Name. Amen.
Prayer. .LORD fill me up with your Word and continue to empower me to walk in your footsteps till the end of my days in Jesus Name, Amen.
