Proverbs 22:1..A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold

What is in a name? A name identifies who you are. When the destiny of Abram was to be changed, God himself changed his name from Abram to Abraham which means father of nations which was what God wanted him to be. He also changed his wife’s name from Sarai to Sarah which also means mother of nations. Therefore the name of a person guides that person until he fulfills his destiny. God promised that Abraham would be a father of nations, so his name would have to reflect the work God planned to do in his life. Each time God called Abraham, He was reminding Himself of the promise He made to make the man a great nation, and father of nations. Therefore having a good name should be a desire of everyone. But why should a good name be chosen rather than great riches?  God gave names to some specific people in the Bible and I want us to see what that name has done in the history of humanity that riches could never achieve.

Let us read from the gospel about the birth of two great people and how the angel was sent to deliver the message. Luke 1:13 reads, ” But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shall call his name JOHN. And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice at this birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink, and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.”  This was John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus, the one that made Jesus known to the children of Israel. He came for a specific assignment and that was to prepare the way for Jesus, and also to turn the children of Israel to God. This assignment was far better than great riches because it has an eternal value that changed lives for better and forever. Money is a tool which only has earthly value, and does not last forever, But the work God used John to do changed the destiny of many people from hell to heaven.

Matthew had this to write concerning the account of the birth of Jesus, “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise, When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph being a just man and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privately. But while he thought on these things, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee, Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS  for he shall save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:18-21). Prophet Isaiah gave a list of his name in Isaiah 9:6, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Through all these names, our Lord Jesus made himself known to the world. The work he did still affect generations after generations for the past 2018 years.

The riches of Solomon the writer of the Proverbs, and many other books, who was given greatest riches than anyone in the world, did not last for eternity because it was only of earthly value. He had tons of gold and silver and could be considered a trillionaire based on our own standard, but the great riches all disappeared into the thin air.  It is only the good name with the good work associated with it that can never be forgotten. So also in our generation, those who have helped many people to make their life better, even long after they are gone, they are still remembered. We can talk about Mother Theresa, Evangelist Billy Graham, lady Evangelist Khatrin Kulman , Pastor Oral Roberts, to mention a few. The work they did honor God and gave glory to Him. Their work is of eternal value,

So beloved, we must aspire to leave a legacy that even after we are gone, they can still make reference to what God used us for. They should not mention our names, and people start to list all the evil we had committed, rather we should endeavor to touch people’s lives for good. We were created for good works, and daily we must ask God to direct us to our own assignment that will bring glory to him. Remember that our Lord Jesus came for a purpose, so also John the Baptist came for a purpose too. Every one God created was sent to fulfill a purpose, and our prayer must be like Isaiah’s plea that says “Here am I, Lord use me”. When you read through the book of Isaiah, you will appreciate good name rather than gold, or silver or any great riches that will perish one day and you will seek for heavenly treasures that are eternal. Let your life have meaning, it is worth more than all the riches of this world.  It is well with you.

Prayer.. Lord let me fulfill the destiny that you created me for. I have chosen to bear your name and represent You wherever You sent me in Jesus name, Amen..
