Exodus 12:13-14…And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. And this day shall be unto you, for a memorial, and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
The sojourn of the children of Israel in the land of Egypt took 430 years. On the night of their departure they were supposed to place the blood of the lamb upon the two side posts, and on the upper door post of the houses, where they shall eat it (the lamb). And they were also supposed to eat the flesh in that night, roasted with fire, and unleavened bread, and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. They must eat with their shoes on their feet, their loins girded, and their staff in their hand, and eat it in haste. This is the LORD’s passover. This was the night the LORD would pass through the land of Egypt and smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt both man and beast and against all the gods of Egypt. It was the day of judgment and the blood was for identification of those who were his. The LORD spared all the children of Israel from the evil that befell the land of Egypt. While the children of Israel were eating the passover with all the specifications given to them, it was a night of weeping and wailing all over the land of Egypt because there was death in every house. What a night of judgment all over the nation. The children of Israel were delivered with a great and powerful outstretched arm of God. They walked out of the land free and with songs in their mouth, they matched to their promised land. They were under the blood covenant, a covenant that would serve as a memorial to them from generation to generation (Exodus 12:8-14).
In the New Testament, John 1:29, has this to say “The next day John (the Baptist) seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world”. Toward the end of his ministry before he was arrested and crucified, Luke 22:14-18 reads, ” And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you, this do in remembrance of me. Like wise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you” From these scriptures in the new testament, we could see that the passover was kept until the time of Jesus, and the reason why Jesus was manifested was to reveal him as the Lamb that would be slain to deliver the world from our sins. Only those that appropriate this blood upon themselves would be saved from the judgment that awaits the whole world. Just like the children of Israel escaped that night of judgment when the angel of death walked through the land of Egypt to kill all the firstborn in the land, so also there awaits the day of the LORD when judgment will be executed upon all nations and only those who bear the mark of the Lord Jesus will be saved because Romans 10:13 says “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Let us see what the scripture has to say regarding differentiating between his chosen people (the Jews) and the Gentiles (represented at this time by the Egyptians). The children of Israel were enslaved, killed and tortured by the Egyptians and their cry reached God and he sent Moses to lead them out. The wickedness exhibited by the Egyptians was a reflection of the state of humanity generally. Sin was the order of the day and God even says in Genesis that the heart of man was desperately wicked. We were dead in our trespasses and sins, and God had to bring us out of this state by his own method. Ephesians 1:4-14 says, “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son. He is rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. He has showered his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding. God has now revealed to us his mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfill his own good pleasure. And this is the plan, At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ, everything in heaven and on earth. Furthermore, because we are united with Christ , and we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance , and he makes everything work out according to his plan. God’s purpose was that we Jews who were the first to trust in Christ would bring praise and glory to God. And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.”.(NIV)
From this scriptures in Ephesians written by Paul, it is clear that only those who have made Jesus Christ their Lord and Savior can be welcomed into God’s family and the blood of Jesus that purchased our freedom will keep us till eternity. Once we have been washed with this blood, we are supposed to continue to be under this saving grace, and we should not go back to living in sin again. When is the judgment day? The book of Revelation reads “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them; and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshiped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands, and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection; on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years….. And I saw a great white throne , and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God, and the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the BOOK OF LIFE; and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them, and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire, This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the BOOK OF LIFE was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:4-6, 11-15).
Beloved, this is revelation of what will happen at the end of the world, as recorded by Apostle John. Christ is the JUDGE and our names must be written in the book of life for us to reign with him for ever. If you have not given your life to Christ, please do it today. Jesus is waiting to hear from you, so that your name can be written in the book of life. If you have given your life to Christ but still living in sin, you need to repent, rededicate your life to Christ and ask for the empowerment to live a guilt-free life. “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8). All that has been written are TRUE and FAITHFUL.(Rev 21:5). I pray the LORD will give us the grace to stay true to his word, and be obedient to the end in Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer…LORD, we know your coming is very near, please send down your Holy Spirit to us afresh to revitalize us again so that we can keep away from sin and do the work of the kingdom.
