Psalms 46 :1-11..God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
David was the last born of eight sons of Jesse, While he was young he was assigned to take care of their father’s flock while the elder sons were enrolled in the army. At the time of their introduction in the Bible, they were said to be with king Saul engaged in the battle with the Philistines. The dangers he would have faced as he tended the sheep everyday in the forest where many dangerous animals were ready to contend with him and the animals would have been uncountable. He gave us an example in the Scriptures how the Lord saved his sheep from being eaten up by lion and the bear. David wrote a lot about the creations that make this God an awesome God. With the things we can see, we can have a little understanding of the greatness of God. From this perspective, David wrote that there is no one to compare to God, and that He is the only One that can help us because He created us. Psalm 46 says , “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble”.
God has been our refuge from eternity past and He is still our refuge in this generation of ours and He will continue to be our refuge when this generation is no more. From everlasting to everlasting He is God. A refuge is a place of safety from heat, rain, different kinds of disasters like earthquake, hurricane, tornadoes, and so on We know that so many organizations move to help people that are faced with many natural disasters like the hurricane Florence that just hit some states. They moved the victims to a safe place temporarily and provide them with food, clothes and a place to lay their heads. This is what God does for us on a daily basis all the days of our lives. He is not only our refuge, He is also our strength, which means that He is the One that enables us to do what we do. He gives power to the weak, so we can do all things through his strength (Philippians 4:19). God is a present Help in trouble. Present is a term used for NOW, which means at all times, God is there to Help us whenever we run into trouble. To those that call upon Him, He responds to them, just like 911 where there are always people backing up this number 24/7 God knows your dwelling place or wherever you are at the time of your crisis or any time at all. He is more efficient than 911, but he uses any one to bring help to you. Psalm 121 declares, “I will look unto the Hills, where will my help come from, my help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth”.
Therefore we should not fear, because David that God used to write the Psalms was writing from his experience with God and also as God inspired him. God has never failed, and will never fail you. He knows all you are going through, but you need to come to Him, He does not force any one, because His love is everlasting, but he invites you to come to him and casts all your burdens upon Him for He cares for you. More than before we need our God now, because the world has turned upside down, but notwithstanding He says in this Psalm, that He is in the midst of it all, and therefore we should “be still and know that He is God”. God is our Refuge, and Strength, a very Present Help in trouble.
Prayer….May the LORD open us up to who He is, so that we can run to Him in every situation of our lives..Lord help us to move nearer to You and lean on You in Jesus Name, Amen.
