Psalm 119:9-11…Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee; O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
We are grateful to God for the wisdom given to man to be able to correct some wrongs in our physical body. Doctors have been able to save lives because of the wisdom God gave to them. Many years ago, people die of so many diseases that they did not have cure for, and also many babies die because of one problem or the other. But today, we thank God for more understanding that has been given to them to prolong life with good health. When a man is sick, therefore, the first place to go to is hospital to visit the doctor. The doctor will ask questions to be able to diagnose the type of sickness, so as to prescribe the right medication for immediate cure. The man goes home, believes the doctor and uses the medication as prescribed. This is the way we take care of our physical body.
How do we take care of our spiritual body? The scripture of today tells us that before we met Christ, we were living a lifestyle that was contrary to God’s ways, because we were conceived in sin and therefore sin dwells in our mortal bodies. Our thoughts and actions were ungodly. Romans 3:13-18 describes the spiritual state of man thus “Their throat is an open sepulchre, with their tongues they have used deceit, the poison of asps is under their lips, whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness, their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace have they not known,There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Is this not a true description of the state of man without Christ? We can call this sickness that needs a spiritual doctor, that can examine us in order to be healed or cleansed. How can this young man regain his spiritual health? The Bible says “by taking HEED thereto according to the word of God.” 1 John 1:8-9 says “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Therefore the first step to cleanse us from our sinful ways is to confess our sins to Jesus, and ask for His forgiveness. Just as doctor would prescribe medication for healing of physical body, so also the Bible tells us that after the confession, we start to seek God with our whole heart, by dwelling on the word of God. This is our daily medication that can give us sound spiritual health, because it is important we recognize the power in the word of God which can restore us back to a clean state. The verse says, “let me not wander away from your commandments”. The power to stay focused and not be distracted from his commandments is in the word of God. When you read the word of God and meditate on it, that is, think about it, believe it, say it to yourself over and over until the truth of the word is revealed to you, then you will start to see changes in yourself. You will also lean on the Holy Spirit, asking him daily to empower you, and the more of the word of God in you, the more power you will have to run from sin. That is the reason why verse 11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Hiding the word of God in our heart will not give room to sin again. We become new creatures in Christ Jesus, as 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new.” The Word of God is paramount to any change we long for both in physical body and spiritual body because Proverbs 3: 1-2 says “My son, forget not my law, but let thine heart keep my commandments. For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.”. May the Lord bless us and give us more understanding of the Word of God in Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer…Lord give me the grace to find time to dwell on the Word of God, meditate on it and apply it so that my life could experience transformation in Jesus Name, Amen.
