Mark 8:36-37…For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Even with the age of technology and the knowledge man has to create many things today, there are so many things that are still beyond our human reasoning. What man has been able to invent due to the wisdom God gave to them, yet they are still exploring new grounds because man has been given tremendous innovative mind that kept on producing different and new things. While I was growing up, television and telephone were luxury, only few people could afford to have one in their house. Later more of these amenities were made available to us at a price we can all afford. I remember when computer was first introduced, all that we had to learn to be able to use it was quite a task, but later we have an interface that was user-friendly, and with the click of some buttons, somebody like me can use it to a certain level to be able to function in the society. The examples I have given here are just a minute portion of what human brain can process. More revolution are still on the way as they will continue to unfold at their own appointed time..
When the Bible says man was created in God’s image, the first thing we read in Genesis was that Adam ( first man) was given an assignment to name all the beast, fowl and all others that God formed, He did this to God’s satisfaction because Genesis 2:19-20 says,”And whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all the cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field.” God tested his creativity in Adam, that is, I want to see you perform the way I also perform, for you were created in my image. It is not surprising then that knowledge continue to increase from generation to generation until now.
Unfortunately, while we are using the God-given brain (talents) to develop this sophisticated tools to better our physical world, we tend to neglect the most important part of human existence which is our soul. The Bible says “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life , and man became a living soul.”(Genesis 2:7). Now, man has not been able to figure out how to escape death which is our inevitable end. With all our technical power, when Mr. Death strikes, we have no power to stop it. No one has done research to even unravel the mystery of death and what happens after death. If up till now, we can not stop people from dying, why can’t we use the same intellect to reason that there is a POWERFUL BEING that is responsible for our existence and all the achievement we have made as human being. Apart from the fact that we did not create ourselves, all the creativity knowledge we have was given to us by our CREATOR who is God of the whole earth. The Bible tells us that when we die, our body returns to dust because we were formed from the dust of the ground, and everybody can attest to that. This makes the Bible to be the TRUE WORD of God. Why we are able to function when we are alive is the breath of life that God has given us and is called OUR SOUL. So the real person is the SOUL. The body is the house of the soul. So the departure of the soul is what we call death. The soul of the person goes back to the Creator.
The scripture of today says “what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? This is saying that even if the body that houses the soul can be so wealthy to have almost everything in the world, (multi-billionaire), if the soul is not well prepared to meet his Creator, there is danger for that soul at the end. The Bible says it is appointed unto us once to die, and after that judgment, also the soul that sins shall die, that is, separated eternally from the Creator, as that soul will end in Hell fire where there will be gnashing of teeth. Therefore it seems wise enough to use our earthly talent to make sure that our soul is also prepared to be back with his Maker at the end of our days on earth. We do understand that the things we formulate will not go with us, the beautiful houses we live in and the very expensive cars or jets we have are not going with us when death comes. Why then do we labor on things that do not last (temporary), and neglect or ignore the very crucial part of our existence which is our final destination? Just as we spend time on earthly work for the advancement of mankind, the Bible advises us “not to allow the Book of the Law to depart from our mouth but to meditate on it day and night, that we may do according to all that is written therein, for then it shall make our way prosperous and we shall have good success.” Reading and meditating on the word of God will increase our wisdom in the knowledge of God, and knowing that God is holy and does not tolerate sin, we will be able to live a blameless and righteous life that will preserve our soul to the end. It is my prayer that we will take our sojourn here seriously because where we end up at the end (Heaven or Hell) depends on our attitude or what we do here. Let us remember that our time will be over one day, and since we do not know that day, let us live to please God day by day, asking for His help to stay focused on Him. We will not miss our eternal home in Jesus name, Amen.
Prayer…Lord help me to stay focused on you and do not allow your word to depart from my mouth . Give me the grace to seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness so that I can enjoy all the other benefits in Jesus Name. Amen.
