1 Samuel 16:7..But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature because I have refused him, for the LORD seeth not as man seeth, for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

The fingerprint of God is visible from generation to generation and it expresses His Sovereignty over all situations. He is the beginning and the end, and He alone knows what plan He has for mankind and also for individuals. Before Adam fell, He knew it would happen, and also he knew how He would bring us back to Himself. He knows the state of our hearts and none of us knows as much as he does, even what we have not done but are capable of doing. He says as the clay is in the hand of the Potter, so we are in His Hand. He declared in His Word that Esau I hate but Jacob I love and this could have been due to the situation of their hearts.

We all know that Jacob stole his brother’s blessings, and yet he was the one that God chose even before they were born, to receive the blessings promised to Abraham. He appeared unto him in his dream and confirmed the blessing that was pronounced on him by his father (Isaac). God does not see the way man sees. When Israel demanded for a king, God gave them Saul, but because Saul failed to fear God and obeyed his charge, he sought for a man after his heart. Samuel judged by appearance, but God judges the heart. Out of eight sons of Jesse, it was David the youngest son that God chose to replace king Saul.

Many of us have judged wrongly because we don’t see the heart, but based our judgment on appearance. We might have made some assumptions concerning what we see and believe that this person is a godly person based on the way he/she greets us, asks after our welfare, or even tries to sympathize with us and shows some kindness to us. If the LORD does not reveal him/her to you, you will not know who he/she really is. This is the reason, I believe, the Bible tells us not to place our trust in any man. Man will fail you but your God will never fail or disappoint you. I also need my heart to be purified constantly so that I too can please God like David (a man after God’s heart). Psalms 139: 23-24 says “Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me, and know my thoughts. And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting AMEN.
Prayer: LORD circumcise my heart or create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me.
